I just watched an in depth examination of D1 NCAA college sports. They had top colleges admit they accepted below stand SATs from athletes.
They explained why Birmingham Southern dropped out of D1 and that there were only about a dozen D1 programs that broke even or made a profit.
A very revealing documentary.

Pop Up I didn't catch the title. If you search PBS you should be able to find it.
It was an hour long and followed by a feature about football at San Jose State. Both showed the resentment to pampered athletes and the quest for eliminating scholarships for sports. The faculty at San Jose voted against D1 sports 2-1 but nothing happened.
They were in depth looks at college D1 sports. It was very interesting. Also showed what happened to athletes that didn't graduate.
I always find it interesting when this is brought up (athletes getting into school w lesser GPA's). Or athletes getting different treatment with their grades.

There are other students who get different treatment as well. Those students w 4.8 GPA's and 1600 SAT scores get different treatment as weel. The difference is; those students don't bring in Millions of $ in revenue for the school. Unless of course they are working in a special group on a research grant as upper classman, (then they are not taking the regular classload either).

There's an issue going on at one of the local private schools. They have a new headmaster who agrees with a bunch of parents. The issue is they pay 25K a year starting at kindergarten. Yet when their kids get to the high school varsity age they're tossed aside athletically for recruited athletes who get partial or full scholarships.
