Well Coach L I guess your question is really, 'how do you get field sense across to your outfielders?"
You do reap the benefits if you get across to them the importance of throwing the ball to the right base...
a) they need to be talking to each other before the next batter comes up about possible senarios
b) they need to understand where everyone is playing (are we deep to pull, are we no-doubles? are we in on the off side and deep on the pull side?
This will figure in to when they are getting the ball
c) they should have an idea if the hitter is fast or if he is Tubby McGee on the bases
This being said there are guys with great tools who do none of these things and then throw the ball to the wrong base. There are guys with not much in the tool kit but their savvy gets the ball to right spot every time...
When I read your question I immediately thought of the many times you do throw the ball to the right base, keep the double play in order but the guy steals on the first pitch... there is still benefit in getting it to second though because at least they had to take a pitch to get him down there and now your pitcher should be ahead. (i'm rambling)
