I agree, Sook - it's not even close. EDGAR all the way.

Edgar Martinez is one of the best batters in history. He didn't just rake, he got on base a lot. He is #21 all-time in career on base percentage. Griffey isn't in the top 100, and Arod is #98.

Down to your last batter, you want the guy who will extend the game. Edgar all the way.

BTW - I saw his last at bat. What a great tribute the Safeco crowd gave him. What a great player and wonderful guy.
Edgar, Other wise known as just Gar.
And the Chant's for every at Bat was tremendous.

Eeeedgar, Eeeeedgar, Eeeeeedgar, Eeeedgar, Eeeeeedgar, Eeeedgar.
The Man made a living driving the ball the other way in the gap.

The Hitting section should just put up Edgar Video's,
Batter's could learn a lot about letting the outside corner pitched ball get deep and Driving it.

I know that most people have not really seen Edgar Martinez's career.
But I truely believe the Man deserve's to be considered for the HOF. JMHO

Griffey is a much better clutch hitter. Arod is haunted by demons that drove him to the bottom of the line-up in the 2005 and 2006 post season, swatting balls out of gloves like a little leaguer, yell "BALLBALLBALL!!" rounding second base, and his wife to wear an effyou tee shirt in the stands...at home games. He has 7 hits, 1 homer in his last 45 post season at bats. He might be the the "softest" superstar in baseball...ever.

No way does Jeter belong on that list.

A-Rod needs to hire Reggie Jackson as his personal guru for the month of October. If he gets over the October hump, then he needs to come off the list as well. Hard to say Youkilis is over-rated when I am not sure he was ever rated to begin with.

I heard that when JD Drew arrived in Boston, Jason Varitek took him aside and he was told in no uncertain terms that he was expected to play and not show up on the DL all the time for various things. It seems to have worked. Perhaps that is why teams are always looking for the next Jason Varitek. Hard to say David Wright is over-rated given his age and production thus far. I agree that some of the voting is likely jealousy. Zito looks like the only one who belongs on the list given the amount of money he makes.
ESPN's Baseball Tonight (who might be the most guilty of Jeter Worship) took a shot at Jeter last week which might be indicative of why some players think he's overrated (or maybe just overhyped....depends on your definition, dunnit?)

Paul McAnulty of the Padres made a running catch in right field foul territory to end the game against the Tigers, plunging into the section of the seats along the right field wall with wheelchair accessibility. It was impressive, but the lunge was the momentum and not part of the catch.

Here's the dialogue:

Orestes Destrade: "Oh, wow. That's not as good as Jeter's catch back a few years ago was it? It's def...(interrupted)"

Steve Berthiaume: "If it's Jeter's catch, they do an hour-long special, don't they?"

Orestes: "Oh, that's cold."

I believe it was, indeed, ESPN who did the protracted Jeter coverage Wink
