I thought that I would share this.

A friend who is a writer went down to interview Ralph Henriques the Key West High School Baseball Coach. He shared his tape recordings of the interview with me. (Key West a community of 28,000 had two players listed in Baseball America's top 100 prospects in the USA.) Two things stand-out from the interview. First, the coach said only 15 kids started the try-outs. Second, because of the cost-of-living in Key West, all of these kids are home grown. None have come to Key West to play baseball.

The coach (who is also a part-time Atlanta Braves Catching Coach), listed State Championship after championship. In the tapes, my writer friend probed for secrets to his success, and it boiled down to basically hard work. His practices range from 3 to 5 hours a day! But, he did say that he felt that the days of Key West Baseball as a powerhouse program were quickly coming to an end. The reason, cost -of-living is driving most of the young families and average families out of the city. Also, this is the coaches last year. He is going to the Braves full-time now that his son is graduating in '05.

Savannah, it is hard to believe that a program that draws from 28,000 population can be so
successful. I pretty much have an idea why but am looking forward to your friend's report.

Ben Harrison-top player at U of Florida last year is from Key West. His father wrote an
excellent book,"Official Visit" detailing Ben's junior year through the recruiting
process. It is indeed very expensive to live there. Have had a couple of conversations
with him about how difficult is is when the majority of the away games are at least 70 miles away.

Their top player from last year is at USF. Dexter Butler. Could be a starter.

When will the article be out?

This guy is a freelance writer who is always compiling stories and material to write about. My guess is, it will be later than sooner. However, if he does do it, it usually ends up some place cool like Playboy, Mens Health, or even Time.

I would love to read "Official Visit". What is the authors last name and how can I buy a copy?
Our HS had a tradition of playing Key West HS the end of each february for a good number of years. I attended one year. Thousands of people came to watch the game, which was also broadcast on radio. It was amazing, this was just a HS game.
One has to understand there is not much to do in Key West, so they do practice for hours each day. They also travel very far for away games, not just a few miles down the road. Lots of dedication and lots of latin influence.
Key West has a reputation of turning out great talent.
Khalil Greene, Padres ss, Clemson University. Just recently named Baseball America's rookie of the year.
Official Visit by Ben Harrison is a very good read from a parent's perspective on recruiting.
