I trolled over to the News-Sentinel's website, hoping, beyond hope, that I might find some info about local baseball games on the site. Those of you who are local know that they have been putting football and boys/girls basketball on their website for a couple of years, complete with statistics, rosters, district standings, etc. Well, they've added s o c c e r. pull_hair

I called to ask if they were going to add baseball. The person answering the phone said probably not until next year, since the site was being maintained by one person.

Could somebody help me make sense of this. noidea

Biz,
Not sure I can have it make sense to those of us who really enjoy good, high school baseball, but I asked a N-S reporter once about their coverage and reporting priorities. His reply was something like....
#1)UT men's sports (football first, basketball- second)
#2) NASCAR
#3) Lady Vols Basketball
#4) High School sports (football first, basketball-second)

If HS baseball is competing with s****r, and is losing ground with newspaper readership, then we won't get much.

At least that's how the N-S sees things. In some communities, the local paper covers *all* high school sports diligently. Without thoughtful folks associated with the HS teams calling in the linescores, we wouldn't even get that.
We've discussed before that a metropolitan daily can't cover individual schools in the same detail as a newspaper from Maryville, Oak Ridge, etc. that deals with a smaller number of schools. I guess Farragut is fortunate to have the Press-Enterprise in its neck of the woods. At least they can get some coverage. The Halls Shopper used to do a nice job covering Halls, Powell, and Gibbs. The other schools in Knox County just have to be happy with the occasional paragraph.

In a former life I worked for a newspaper and understand that editorial space depends on advertising. What dismays me is that they would decide to expand to s****r first. Maybe its because s****r is a lot easier to track. You don't have to deal with all the stats that baseball brings to the table.

There are plenty of coaches and scorekeepers who would be happy to assist in compiling and reporting the necessary information. So, to some extent, the excuse that there's only one person at the newspaper who's maintaining the site is, IMO, a copout. And, the website is not limited to physical space like the newspaper itself. If they wanted to, they could publish boxscores instead of linescores.
Sorry HV... can't help you on the Halls score.

Replying to Bizazz's post: One must admit that the reason the newspapers place all the football, basketball, and now (gasp!!) s****r stats in the paper... is to sell the paper. The proud parents love to see their child's name in the paper. I would settle for no individual stats, but box scores, a weekly update district standings by classification, and a decent "roundup" of games. Generating a cell-phone network of folks like you to gather that information couldn't be that hard for a good reporter. Our practice at Farragut is not to release individual stats until season's end.
