My son throws it. He digs his index fingernail into the seam. He has experimented with the grip to find what is comfortable to him. You should do the same.
I've seen the grip with the finger tip or the knuckle. It's a nasty pitch if you can throw it properly. The best I ever saw was Mussina for seven innings against the Red Sox in the ALCS in 2004. Here's a site on pitching grips. Scroll down to find it.
Lets cut to the chase here so that perhaps you can improve your game---
Is it not two years in a row now that you have not made your HS team?---That being the case I think it would serve you well to work on the basic skills instead of trying to learn a new trick pitch.
Work on getting physically stronger- and improve your basic skills before you try to get fancy
Not trying to be a wise guy here or cut you down but first things first
TR. I have done just that. I have worked my butt off lifting and stuff with a trainer. With my friends on the varsity team. I gained a nice 15 lbs this off season, and am in great shape.
I probably know more about you and your baseball ability than any other posters on here--my suggestion is this---keep working as the manager---keep working on your basics to get them where they should be---the problem for me is being cut two years running
Also be cool with the "F.U." type posts you made in another thread--any coach reading this will be turned off rapidly--- it sets a bad tone
