SportsDay baseball player of the week:Michael Russo

What he did: Russo hit a two-run homer in the third inning and retired the side after taking the mound with two runners on base in the seventh in Friday's 2-1 victory over Flower Mound. The win snapped Lewisville's eight-game losing streak against Flower Mound and pulled the teams into a three-way tie with Allen for first place in District 8-5A. Russo went 2-for-3 with a double and four RBIs and allowed two runs in four innings to earn the win Tuesday against Plano East.


Michael Russo The stats: Russo is 5-2 with four saves and a 1.89 ERA. He has 61 strikeouts and 25 hits allowed in 37 innings. He is hitting .458 (27-for-59) with eight doubles, four triples, two homers and 25 RBIs.

Who is he? Russo is a 6-2, 215-pound senior pitcher/third baseman. He was a first-team all-district selection last season.

He said it: "This is the biggest win of my career at Lewisville. This is the first time I've ever beat them [Flower Mound]. I was hoping I'd get the ball."

Coach said it: "Mike's just a great competitor. He was critical. He's really been incredible for us in district." – Mike Campbell

Did you know? Russo has signed with Lon Morris, a junior college in Jacksonville, Texas. ... He enjoys playing paintball. "It's an adrenaline rush – like when they give you the ball with two runners on and no outs in the seventh inning," he said.
