My sons have a tournament there this summer (listed as Emerson, GA) and I have heard some crazy stories about players having to drive 1.5 to 2 hours one way, from a hotel that they booked through the required booking company, to games because the fields are all over the city...east, west, south, and north of Atlanta. Without knowing which fields I will be playing at yet but hoping to be as centrally located to the fields as possible, which area is recommended? Downtown hotels are so expensive. Any advice on which area gives me the best odds of the least amount of driving?

I believe you are required to go through the Hotel placement site. We have been there several years and have had some extra driving on a day or two but that is just part of participating in this world class event. Being with your team is also a major element for the tournament. We have been to the finals twice and won once and I don't think that would have happened if the team hadn't been together during the off hours.
If it's like it's been in the past, your team can pay a "fee" to get out of the hotel deal. Even if you don't, as long as some of your team stays there, you'll have no problem going somewhere else. Emerson is about 30 miles NW of Atlanta. Last year we never drove over an hour....and they do a pretty good job of not making you drive that kind of distance twice in a day. There are a lot of really nice houses on Lake Allatoona (5 min from Lakepoint) that are available to rent....which is what we did....but I'm guessing they're already booked. If you're looking at hotels....stay on the NW side....Vinings....or Marietta. Almost all the HS fields they use are the NW, N or NE side....staying downtown would put you a long way from all of them. Good luck!
Thank you for your responses, much appreciated.
As a local I'm going to chime in...Marietta is huge and covers about 30+ minutes from end to end, and not all of Marietta is close to a highway. Make sure you mapquest actual distance before you book.
From past events you could be in Cartersville, Kennesaw, Emerson, Dallas, Euharlee, Marietta...pretty much all over the metro area. I think it's a case of pick your poison.
If you choose Woodstock East Cobb Baseball (Marietta) is 5 minutes away, Cartersville is less than 30, Emerson is less than 30...or if you are looking for a place to stay that will allow you to take side roads (i.e.not dependent on 75) Canton is especially helpful to get to those places. If you stick up in Emerson, Cartersville, and Dallas then Cartersville would be my pick.
From what I have heard, only about 25% of the actual games take place at Emerson....something to think about.
We stayed in a PG-designated hotel near Perimeter Springs. Easy drive to movies, restaurants, Georgia Tech, etc for after games etc. Driving to venues was fun. Traffic's nuts, but no more so than home. And we got to see some really cool suburban HSs and play on great fields. I think that stuff is all part of the fun of doing the bigger PG events at their home site. Also helps when your son plays a good tournament! And although I am a city guy through and through, I thought suburban Atlanta was beautiful.
Lakepoint should have four more fields ready for the summer season. This should start cutting down on the number of games that will need to be played elsewhere.
If you don't mind not having a television, there are cabin rentals available at Red Top Mountain State Park, right on Lake Allatoona. Red Top is less than 15 minutes from Lakepoint.
Living in Atlanta, I would say you need to be close to route 75 somewhere north of route 285. That gives you a lot of options, but also gets you outside the city itself. Just getting through the intersection of 285 and 75 could add 10 minutes to the drive.
what week are you going to be there? My son's team wil be there a lot this summer.

When we played at East Cobb a couple years ago, it seemed the games were everywhere, at least a half hour away to get anywhere.
