They have a young head coach who has only been there a couple of years. The guy before that was a former Winthrop or Coastal assistant who left sort of abruptly after a year or two. They play at the old American Legion stadium in Greenwood. It's not bad, but nothing special. The Braves had a minor league team that played there years ago.

A lot of people don't know it, but Lander is a state supported school, so your lottery money should help a lot. The town of Greenwood has grown a lot in recent years, but it's a little off the beaten path.

I have a couple of friends with daughters there and they really like it.

They usually have a little "showcase" there in the fall, usually in September I believe. Cost is minimal.

As a state supported school Lander has the opportunity to really expand its program, provided it has the right leadership. At this point it's hard to say when and if that will happen.
Thanks for taking the time to reply. My son is looking at USC Upstate,Francis Marion, and Spartanburg Methodist as well.We have to weigh $$ vs fit and academics. He just loves to play and we will see where he lands. If you know of a team that needs a 6'0 188 lb catcher with 4 yrs Legion experience any info appreciated.

I grew up in the Florence area. My brother and sister both went to Francis Marion. From all accounts it is a very good school. There is a kid therefore who used to play for me in Little League and Pony League. He's a redshirt freshman and loves it so far.

My son played Legion ball for Tim Wallace and Matt Williams, the coaches at SMC. I think the world of both of them. The big pluses there are the coaches and their track record of placing kids at other schools when they graduate from SMC. The only downsides are the facilities, and possibly the academics. They also bring in a lot of kids each year.

USC Upstate has had incredible growth in the last couple of years. I don't really know Matt Fincher, but I was favorably impressed with him at some of the camps my son went to. In the conversations I've had with Triplett he also struck me as a good guy. I really look for Upstate to take off in the next few years. I know a few Upstate professors and by all accounts it is a good school academically.
