A couple of days have past, so I can finally write about the end of my son's HS season and HS career.  Most of you dealt with it a few months ago, but we are in Iowa where HS ball is played in the summer.  The boys lost their chance at the state tourney, but had a great season and should be proud of their efforts. I am most proud of my son, he displayed great focus and determination throughout the final game. Unfortunately, the game just didn't go our way.

My wife and I waited patiently for him to leave the clubhouse...about 30-40 minutes.  He slowly walked out, trying to hold back tears, and told us how much he loved us and thanked us for all of our support. Several other team parents stopped to hug him or shake his hand and wish him well and to say what a great player and kid he has been.  He may not be the most talented player in Iowa HS baseball, but few will surpass his passion and dedication for the game.He loves the game and will undoubtedly be a great coach one day.  But, for now, he's turning the page and heading off to college ball...practices start in just a few weeks.  We are so proud of what he has accomplished to this point and the future looks very bright for him...on and off the field.  It feels really good to see that all of our miscues as parents for the past 18 years did no irrepable damage.    Play ball!

Congrats!!  It's a bittersweet point in time.  My son is going into his sophomore year in college.  We went over to the HS field the other day to throw with each other and it just felt like yesterday he was going into his freshman year of HS.  I remember vividly the anticipation and nervousness of that 1st year of HS ball.  Very weird and I know that his next 3 years in college ball will just fly by.  Need to work very hard on really enjoying the moment.  It's a special time and won't be long before these guys totally fly the coop.

Enjoy the next few years Bleacher Dad.  Good luck this fall!!!

Thanks Bleacher Dad, great post. I too experienced my son's last HS game much the same way. My son was attending a charter school here in northern CA that has been ranked in the top ten public HS in the US(7-12). The only problem was that they had no baseball. After son's freshman year, we finally convinced his mom that he needed to go to a HS that had baseball. Academics were always the focus, so our compromise was a small catholic college prep school with only 212 students total, boys and girls. His sophomore year a total of 13 kids tried out for the team. All made varsity(no JV) and went 2-10 in league & 6-20 overall. Junior year 12 kids made the team and 11 JV. League 4-8 & 11-24 overall. Senior year, 14 kids, league 10-2 & 20-6 overall and won first league title in the schools 8 year program. I remember the moment when my son was being interviewed after he pitched a CG SO he was asked how to describe this league title, he said, "Probably the happiest moment of my life". I still get teary watching the interview.

At that point, I knew we made the right decision.

He graduated with honors and will be attending a DI school with a baseball & business school scholarship. I just can't believe it went by so fast.

All the best to you and your son!

It won't be long before your son has a college coach or college captain fussing at him in Fall practices.....then he'll feel better.

+1!  I still remember the bittersweet feeling after my son's final HS game last year.  Especially when they were two outs away from going to the final four, but lost in the state quarterfinals.  It was a long ride home (literally - 90 miles).

Had another bittersweet moment the other night.  His legion team had made it to the district championship game as the #2 seed.  This was his last year of legion ball.  He had a great night against the #1 seed going 3-4 with a walk and reached on a FC, but they lost a close one 8-5.

Now it's back to college ball (JUCO) this fall and spring.
