It's a bit different than being on ground and moving laterally and your legs turn, but it certainly can't hurt. And there are some who swear this type of training improves knee stability.

Certainly, this type of training won't have a negative effect and can have a positive benefit when used properly.

On area it can realy help in in leg endurance for catchers.
Some exercises I do on a slide board are:
Slide Board Splits
-stand in the middle of the board with your feet together, and slowly slide them apart, and then slide them back together
-make sure not to slide your feet to far apart because trust me, it is a lot harder than it sounds
-you should feel this in your inner thigh

Slide Board Pikes
-Place your hands right off the end of the slide board with your feet on the slide board
-Slide your feet back, and then slide them towards your hands focusing on keeping your abs tight
-Make sure you keep your shoulders directly over your hands
