Leftfielders for Boston and New York

How did Manny miss that ball in the 8th? It's like he doesn't even try. But man his swing is pretty.

I think I woke all 3 of my kids when I yelled at Matsui "Catch the fu****g ball!!!". My wife told me to cut him some slack since he had such a great offensive game, but still, "catch the fu****g ball!!"

Matsui and Manny should DH and leave the job for someone that knows how to play the outfield!

Actually, Manny over the course of the season, has made some outstanding catches in left field...but then again only those who consistently watch each and every game would be aware of that fact...I am sure he did not want his faux pas to be televised on national TV...as far as making him the DH...where would you put Ortiz...and if Ortiz is the 1st baseman where would you put Millar...all three have had an outstanding year at the plate...such a dilemma when you have such great hitters in your line up and so little place to put them...a managers nightmare

Matsui is an pretty good fielder...I have been in Yankee stadium and seen him make some amazing catches in right and left field. He miss played the ball but that is not normal for him on defense.

Didn't watch the whole game but it looked like Manny just doesn't have great wheels. He isn't the first power hitting outfielder with average speed at best. Matsui made a poor play in a big situation but overall seems to be a fairly decent outfielder.

It is simple--

They both hit

They both Produce

They offset each other defensively

Those of us who have the good fortune to Manny and Matsui play all season we can can tell you that they are not great fielders but not as bad as they looked under the microscope the other day.

The age old statement of "If you can hit" they will find you a place to play.

This is true from little league, high school, college, all the way to the pro's.


I disagree with the person who posted hitting is overrated!

I have seen all my life that hitters get to play, get scouted, and get more oppertunities.

You don't make all conference, high school/college all american, or professional all star by just flashing the glove and stealing bases. Hitting and hitting with power as a outfielder,catcher, third or first baseman is very important.

That may be true - but remember:

Hideki and Manny arent really thinking about how bad they are defensively when they are cashing their monthly million dollar checks.

They could miss every ball hit to them for the rest of their lives - but they will still bring home the serious bacon. Guaranteed.

Didn't we as little leaguer's teach in the outfield, your first step is always back on line drives? Jeez...Ramirez looked horrible on that play, christ, why even put your glove up, do you think it is gonna just fall in it? He is slow, doesn't really look all that athletic to be an outfielder, and wears his uniform like a slob. but boy can he hit, he is the man. just wish boston would wake up and let him DH. in between at bats, he could go into the clubhouse and take a nap. just appears that he really doesn't care about his defense at all. the old saying that if you can hit, they will find a place for you to play, certainly is true in this case. don't even get me started on Godzilla...get a haircut for christ's sake, you are on television. just kidding. I think though if i was torre for a day, i would put lofton in the outfield, and let matsui dh also.

trade one of them and get some pitching and defense. sooner or later you are gonna get shutdown by good pitching (like last night), so how 'bout matching that pitching, and play good defense. I don't know, ramirez and ortiz are great hitters, but you really need to decide on one, because they are such liabilities on defense. besides, ramirez is way over priced. you could probably afford two or three good pitchers in his place

He is one of the best hitters in baseball, like him or not. He might be the favorite for the AL MVP award.

By the way, they did try to trade him during the past off season. Seems like they were working on a deal that included another big bat though. I've actually seen him make some great plays in the OF, but for sure that's not what they pay him the big bucks for.

Ortiz is not a liability on defense anymore......he never plays defense.

Manny has played well in LF this year and made catches all season that he usually doesn't make.

He deserves MVP consideration because of his numbers and the fact that he plays in the field.
I have trouble with the notion that Ortiz merits consideration since he is a liablity defesnively, IMO.

The Sox has taken the "dance with the one who brought ya" mentality and they will need that offense to get back in this thing.

Having watched well over 100 Yankee games each of the last 2 seasons, I have been impressed with Matsui's fielding. He isn't fast nor does he have a strong arm, but he know how to get to the ball and has a quick release. He has well honed instincts to make up for his lack of fielding talent. I have often said, we need more coaches over here who teach what he has learned.I was surprised by his misplay the other night.

I too have watched Matsui for the past two years--- I think the ball he missed the other night was due to the strength of Ortiz and since the ball was hit to the opposite field and was hit so hard it fooled him

totally agree with comments above. It was just that manny's misplay in left couldn't have come at a worst time. And I would bet that if you asked his highschool coach, when he played centerfield very well for him, he was probably about 80 pounds lighter.

The thing with Manny is sometimes he will just make insane plays (like the catch against the yankees at the end of the season) or sometimes he looks like an idiot.
