I take it as a given that a lefty pitcher can have success at the game with a lower velo than a righty.
But I've never heard an explaination why.

Lefties are believed to be better at controlling the opponent’s running game. They usually have more value because there are fewer of them. As well Left handers typically will face more righties than they will lefties taking longer for the batter to locate then ball, causing more deception. Typically lefties have natural tailing movement of their FB.

LoL, of course it is! In the southern hemisphere the righties ball tails naturally more than the lefties because of fluid flow dynamics, Bernoulli’s effect. Maybe? Maybe not!

So with everything else being equal an 85MPH throwing lefty statiscally should not be any more effective than an 85MPH righty?
Many of the greatest hitters throughout baseball history have been devastating lefthanded hitters. Often the only pitchers who could counter them are lefthanded pitchers. Many parks, especially old style parks were configuered toward lefthanded hitters also.

Read the responses to the question; it seems most people will prefer a lefty to a righty, even if the righty is throwing 3-4 mph harder.
