I did not witness this - just read about it in the paper from a HS game.

Runners on 2nd & 3rd w/ 2 outs; count is 2-2 on the batter. Batter check swings at ball in the dirt and immediately starts running to 1st. Umpire calls ball and no swing. Catcher throws ball to 1st to get runner and runners on 2nd & 3rd score.

Is this legal?

FWIW, umpires rulled dead ball and made runners return to their bases.

Im not following totally.....are you asking if its legal to run?....if there is any question, especially with 2-2 and 2 outs, you are darn tooting its legal to run...you let the umpire decide if it was a swing/strike......

Each player from each team is equally expected to know the situation and act accordngly.....2 outs, the catcher throws to 1st....Im not following here after that...was it a bad throw?...he didnt get the putout?

all in all legal, but would be nice to have the additional info...

piaa_ump,
The way I read the OP, the batter checked his swing on a 2-2 count, and it was ruled "no swing".

So there is no putout at 1st, because the count is now 3-2.

Of course it is legal for a batter to run to first with 2 outs and a 2 strike count if there is any question of whether it is a checked swing.

It seems to me that the umpire erred in declaring a dead ball.

I'm going to bet than an umpire that makes a call like this actually called "dead ball."

The article did say that when challenged, the umpire said it was 'defensive deception'and therefore a dead ball.

Defensive deception, eh? Can't find the phrase in any of my rule books.
