Saw a discussion on another board. I have never seen this and I don't know what the rule actually is.

With a 1-1 count, batter leaves back foot in box, steps front foot out to get signs from third base coach. Pitcher delivers ball before batter resets in box. Pitch is called a strike. Coach objects, but loses.

I know it happens all the time, often umpires will hold up hand, keeping pitcher from delivering until the umpire gives him the go ahead. Is that just courtesy, or what is the rule. In this case, the coach said, there is no time unless the batter asks for it and he "the umpire" grants it.

Thanks

As Pirate Fan says if he is asked to get in the box and doesn't then the PU calls for a directed strike. This usually happens when there is a disputed call and the batter won't get in the box, or he is trying to delay the game for some reason. In most cases the batter will step back with one foot and get his signs. This is acceptable if it's after a pitch and the pitcher hasn't gotten ready to pitch. If this is the case and the pitcher pitches, then it's a quick pitch. A quick pitch is a ball with no runners, a balk with runners.
