Now that the four champs have been crowned in NHIAA time to look forward to Legion. Bedford picks up Hudon from Merrimack as well as some other talented kids. Derry adds Singster to there line up. Not sure about the Manchester teams, any insite out there? Laconia adds players from the state champion Winnisquam team including Jordan Cote. Exeter made the State Tourney last year I had one if their young guys Nick Gray on a team a few years ago, I expect big things from him. Keene is Keene always a contender. So let's get some talk going.

Londonderry should be very well coming off a school state title they are the defending champs and i heard word that neverman can play again so if thats the case then they have to be considered one of the tops teams if not the top team. Hudson has a lot of expierence back with 6 19 year olds who all played college ball this past season they have lelievre keene coughlin from campbell played at keene jones Daniel webster Bonin from campbell played at daniel webster also. bratton and hagman nhti. To go along with terril from alvirne baker from campbell brun lessard from alvirne and a bunch of others from alvirne. Gabe williams from campbell who got kicked off campbell but is one of the best hitters in the league when he plays. Should be an interesting summer. Does anyone no is monteville and jones are playing for portsmouth? how about coppinger and johnson from st thomas are they playing anywhete?
It looks like both Jones and Montville will be playing for the North East Baseball 18U team this summer (listed on their roster). They both played for their 17U team last year. I believe it was how they got the exposure to get signed to play for their respective ACC teams.

That is probably why Jordan Cote is playing for the Ruffnecks this summer.
I don't hear much about Plaistow Legion. Although they had a tough initial season, they certainly are a team not to overlook. Returning in 2010 are Matt Faia, 3rd Team All State, Matt Sheehan, a solid back stop and capable bat, Tyler Johnson, coming off an outstanding season at Sanborn, Lucas Alper, Honorable Mention All State, an outstanding defensive Left Fielder and most feel the best hitter on the team with sound Mechanics. Works most pitchers and sees the most pitches. John Faia returns with Power, DJ Travolini can track any ball in center field and it looks like they have some pitching depth in 2010.

Good Luck to all. Looking forward to a fun baseball season.
Bedford moves to 2-0 in American Legion District B play with a 9-7 win at Salem Monday night. Nick Poore got the start for Salem and Lucas Olen for Bedford. Olen went 5 strong innings and left the game with the score tied 4-4. Poore went 6 strong innings striking out 9 and left the game with a 5-4 lead. Marc Russomanno earned the win for Bedford and Spencer Damon pitched the ninth for the save. Joey Maher broke the 7-7 tie in the top of the 9th with a two out RBI tiple to right and then scored the insurance run when the right fielder's throw eluded the 3rd baseman. Andrew Klimm tripled, doubled and scored the winning run for Bedford. Zach Husband had 3 of Bedford's 10 hits on the night.
Then I guess I'll see him Saturday July 10th @ 5pm as Manchester takes on Nashua in their first district game. Nashua won districts as 13's and lost districts to Manchester as 14's. Top two teams in the district. I'd expect him to pitch in that game. He beat Nashua last year in the winner take all game in relief on short rest. Gutsy performance.

Game is at North Common field in Nashua (behind Holman) for those that would like to see him pitch.

(I know it isn't Legion quality ball but most of the kids were freshman or JV starters for their schools. At least for Nashua)
Bedford 7-5 winners @Derry

Bedford won an exciting game with 2 runs in the top of the 10th. Derry scratched out a run in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5. Spencer Damon, who earned the win in relief, entered the game and induced a fly out to right with the bases loaded to end the threat. Matt Woodmansee drew a leadoff walk for Bedford in the top of the 10th. With one out, Jordan St. Jean lined a double to right center scoring Woodmansee. St. Jean scored the insurance run on a two out RBI single by Mike Laflamme. Andrew Klimm, Joey Maher and Zach Husband all had multiple hit games to lead Bedford at the plate. Tom Hudon pitched a strong 6 innings as the Bedford starter and Ryan Mossman pitched well in relief. Bedford improves to 3-0 in District B while Derry falls to 1-1. Bedford has their home opener at Riley Field against Hudson on Friday night at 6:30 PM.
Bedford 3-1 winners @Milford

Lucas Olen of Bedford vs Pat Tempone of Milford. Both pitched well in a well played game, but Olen gets the W on 7 strong innings allowing a single run. Marc Russomanno works a scoreless 8th and Spencer Damon closes it for the save in the 9th. Andrew Klimm had an opposite field homer in the 1st and Zach Husband plated the eventual game winner with an RBI double in the 3rd. Bedford moves to 4-1 in District play while Milford drops to 2-3.

P.S. Nothing close to what nhmonty describes in East Cobb, but we are seeing a steady stream of scouts at Bedford Legion games including St. John's last Friday.
Hudson won the game 12-9. Joey Maher got the start for Bedford and left the game after 6 with a 6-4 lead. Hudson scored 7 in the top of the 7th - the first 5 without a ball leaving the infield - not kidding. Bedford battled back with 2 in the bottom of the 7th and Hudson added another in the top of the 8th on a Kory Lelievre homer to center. Lelievre also pitched the 9th allowing a run before shutting the door on the rally with runners at 2nd and 3rd. Cullen Baker started for Hudson and was relieved by Mitch Brun in the 6th. Ethan Hurley and John Coughlin had 3 hits each for Hudson and Derek Bratton drew 4 walks.

@Londonderry - 4

Bedford turned a tight 4-4 game into a rout with 4 runs in the top of the 7th and 3 more in the top of the 8th. Bedford had 20 hits on the night against 4 Londonderry pitchers. Mike Laflamme (3H,2R,2RBI,SB), Matt Woodmansee (3H,2B,4RBI), Jordan St. Jean (3H,2B,2R), Pat Parker (3H,2B,1R) and Lucas Olen (3H,2B,4R,3RBI) led the way for Bedford. Chase DiStasio pitched the final 4 to earn the win in relief of Joey Maher. Londonderry starter Justin Rennick pitched well for 6 full before giving way to the Londonderry bullpen. Casey Carollo was charged with the loss. Geoff Fisher had 3 hits to lead Londonderry. Bedford is 5-1 on the season (5-0 on the road) and now begin a stretch of 6 straight at home beginning Friday night at 6:30 PM against Salem at the SAU Field (Bedford High Field). The home stretch includes a game against Lebanon at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium on Wednesday, July 7th at 4:30 PM.

@Bedford - 4

Salem avenged an earlier loss to Bedford behind strong pitching from starter Nick Poore and reliever J Morin. Bedford starter Marc Russomanno matched Poore before leaving after seven with the scored tied 4-4. Salem scored an unearned run in the top of the 7th and Bedford squandered a great scoring opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Bedford loaded the bases with 2 outs as Poore's pitch count moved north of 100. On a 2-0 pitch the Bedford runner at first was caught off the base - Salem catcher Josh Treff fired down to first forcing the runners to advance - a strong throw by the first baseman (Swarbrick) cut down the runner at the plate. Salem grabbed the lead in the top of the 8th, converting a leadoff walk, infield single and a bunt single into 2 runs with a fielder's choice and a well executed squeeze play. J Morin pitched the final two innings to get the save. Morin also led the Salem offense with a pair of doubles. Jordan St. Jean led the way for Bedford with 3 hits including a 2 RBI triple in the 5th that gave Bedford a 4-2 lead at the time. Bedford retians it's lead in District B-1 at 5-2 while Salem improves to 3-4. Bedford hosts Nashua at Riley Field tonight at 7:00 PM.

Derry - 2

Bedford starter Lucas Olen pitched a complete game to lead Bedford Post #54 to an 8-2 win over Derry Post #9. Olen struck out 9 Derry batters while only walking 1 and scattering 9 hits over 9 innings. Bedford’s 14 hit attack was led by Mike Laflamme, Andrew Klimm, Matt Woodmansee and Chase DiStasio who all had multiple hit games. Brendan Cosgrove added 2 RBI’s for Bedford with a single and a sacrifice fly. Bedford shortstop Woodmansee and second baseman Zach Husband turned 3 double plays in the game. Starter PJ Singster took the loss for Derry while Connor Brill and Josh Luciano had 2 hits each. Bedford moves to 6-3 in District B play and will next meet Lebanon on Wednesday, July 7th at MerchantsAuto.com stadium. First pitch is at 4:30 PM.
Bedford Post #54 outslugged Lebanon 13-10 at MerchantsAuto.com Stadium in a late afternoon game. Bedford got untracked with a 2 run homerun by Brendan Cosgrove in the 3rd inning. Mike Laflamme (2 doubles, 2 RBI), Zach Husband (4 hits, 4 RBI) Nate Harrington (2 hits, 2 RBI) and Andrew Klimm (3 hits, 3 runs) paced the Bedford offense. Tom Hudon pitched a strong 4 innings in relief of starter Spencer Damon who left after 3 with a leg cramp. Matt Woodmansee allowed 1 earned run in the final 2 innings and was credited with the win. With the exception of an error in the 8th that led to 3 unearned Lebanon runs, Bedford played a strong defensive game highlighted by big time catches by first baseman Jordan St. Jean in the right field bullpen area and by shortstop Lucas Olen in foul ground behind 3rd base.

Sean Drake got the start for Lebanon and pitched well for several innings despite yielding the homerun in the 3rd. Lebanon did have the bats going and hit several balls deep including a gap double by Drake. Bedford's speedy outfielders combined with the spacious outfield at the Merch was a factor in the game.

Bedford is now 7-3 in District B while Lebanon falls to 4-4. Bedford hosts Jutras Post tonight at Riley Field - first pitch is set for 6:30 PM.
I have been to 7 Massachusetts Legion games this week, and while I haven't noticed a whole lot of difference in the talent level I have seen that each team has at least 3 high schools its drawing from to build the roster. Althouth there seems to be more private schools so maybe that's a factor.

Meanwhile we've had folks out at some legion games in Maine. One game attended was Smith Tobey vs. Brunswick. When I was a player I was on Smith Tobey and we had the Brunswick kids on the team. When I was a coach at Brunswick High they started a legion team which put their Sr. Babe Ruth team out of business and sucked players away from Smith Tobey. Seems to me that would dilute the talent of the Legion programs and have less total kids playing ball.

Anyways I know we've talked it to death but I think less Legion teams more Sr. Babe Ruth teams would be great for everyone.
Shawn,

I've seen the same thing in NH, but I'm not sure its a bad thing or not. I look at it as just the evolution of different baseball leagues over the years. Two things I've noticed here is that there are a lot more quality players playing AAU baseball in high school. 10 years ago these guys all played legion. Plus there are more legion teams than there were 10 years ago. So you now have more kids playing legion, but some of the top talent in AAU. I guess that means the overall talent level of legion is probably down a little. And also there are now 15 jr. legion teams in NH, which just started 3 years ago.

With so many more talented players now playing AAU, legion, and jr. legion, a big loser is probably Babe Ruth. I know in NH district 1 there are only 2 teams in the 15 yr old district tournament! Plus there are quality summer leagues now also.

I think while the organizations are shifting and evolving, baseball players that want to play can probably still find a level of ball to play appropriate to their talent. Its certainly different than it was 10 years ago, and constantly changing, but I'm not sure if that's good or bad.
HUGE game at holman tonight SMAN!!!! Are you going to ne there? Bedford and hudson fighting for the last spot in the playoffs. Who will take it? Hudson has won the previous two meetings. Last time John Coughlin pitched a compelete game shutout Hudson has been off for almost a week so most of the pitchers should be ready to go. They have seen maher both times and got to him pretty well i wonder if he is going tonight against them?

I was at the first 4 innings of this game and this article is pretty accurate. Seemed Hudson had seen enough of Maher to know how to work him.

Hudson impressed me with their balance at the plate. I see they lost tonight but they are tough and could stay alive tomorrow.
I just got a very, very excited phone call from Mr. Riley Palmer. Goffstown is the NH state champ, headed to Palmer Field (I'm told its the home of the palmer dog) to play on. Congrats to the teams in the tourney and to Goffstown. And to Palmer... kid works his tail off and its been a pleasure to be a part of his development.
