Somehow, that does not surprise me........
The 11 runners left on base is a telling stat for how things went for Williamsburg Post 39 during its legion baseball state-tournament opener Tuesday night.

WILLIAMSBURG - By the time the final pitch had been thrown, four hours and 35 minutes had elapsed, and the two teams had played 16 grueling innings. But for Mechanicsville Post 175, it was worth the wait.
Mechanicsville defeated Williamsburg Post 39 6-5 on Wednesday in the losers’ bracket of the American Legion state tournament at Warhill Sports Complex. And Post 175 coach Eddie Gates was all smiles.
"Gosh it’s just great to get a win," he said.
Post 175 (23-5) staved off elimination, but needs five more wins in three days to be crowned state champ. The team’s next hurdle comes today at 10 a.m. Win that, and Post 175 will play again tonight at 8.
In the top of the 16th, catcher Mitch Keeler skied a double over the center fielder’s head, scoring Patrick Holler. Keeler caught all 16 innings and went 3 for 9 at the plate. He scored a run in the third inning.
Cody Thompson pitched the final two innings, allowed two hits and picked up the win. Keeler said he got a second wind in the later innings that pushed him through.
"I got that second adrenaline rush," Keeler said. "It’s just the love of the game, I guess. We just hate to lose."
Williamsburg (14-3) scored three runs in the second and held the lead until the ninth inning. Mechanicsville put a runner in scoring position in every inning from the fifth through the eighth, but never scored.
Finally in the ninth, the runs came. Dalton Ruch (3 for 8) doubled and scored on Bryant Lowry’s single. Sean King singled to plate pinch-runner Thompson.
Post 175 scored twice in the 12th, benefitting from three singles, an error and a walk. But Post 39’s Mike Anerton responded with an RBI double in the bottom half of the inning and scored on an error to tie the game.
The score remained knotted until the 16th. King pitched eight innings in relief for Post 175, allowing two runs on three hits.
Mechanicsville starter Michael Thomas pitched six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits and five walks. He was ejected in the ninth inning for verbally expressing his frustration after grounding out.
Thomas won’t be eligible to play in the rest of the tournament, Gates said.
Playing extra-inning affairs isn’t strange for Mechanicsville, which had a 12-inning contest in the regular season and a 13-inning loss in the District 11 tournament. Still, Keeler has never played a game as long as this one.
"I think that was the longest one, for sure," Keeler said.

WILLIAMSBURG –Albemarle Post 74 continued its dominant play in the American Legion Baseball state tournament on Wednesday, cruising to a 16-2 win over Roanoke Post 3. The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule.
Austin Batten went 3 for 4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored to lead Post 74, while Jordan Gentry went 3 for 5 with three runs scored. Keegan Woolford went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored, Kyle Vidano went 3 for 3 with a walk and four runs scored and Connor Lilly was 2 for 3 with two RBI for Post 74.
Austin Turner got the start for Post 74, pitching the first five innings. He finished with six strikeouts and allowed one unearned run. Dustin Knight pitched the final two innings for Post 74, giving up one earned run.
Post 74 plays the Danville-Winchester winner at 5 p.m. today.
Just heard that due to the weather, the loser's bracket games have been cancelled and will not be played at all.
Just heard that due to the weather, the loser's bracket games have been cancelled and will not be played at all.
In the first game, Mechanicsville Post 175 scored six runs in the top of the sixth inning to go ahead 6-3. Roanoke Post 3 was coming to bat in the bottom of the sixth when the game was stopped due to weather. Also, before the games started, teams were informed that the loser's bracket games would be limited to seven innings. As mentioned above, this game along with the other loser's bracket games were cancelled.
So it basically has become a single elimination tournament.
Yes ... just the title game between Post 74 Albemarle and Post 325 Danville ... winner advances to Reg'l.
Is that game still scheduled for tonight? Weather does not look promising according to the radar. Lots of green, orange and red......

WILLIAMSBURG The baseball season began and ended in downpours for Mechanicsville Post 175.
Thursday, a wave of rain swept through eastern Virginia and washed away the losers’ bracket in the American Legion state baseball tournament. Post 175’s game was stopped because of the deluge and the field couldn’t be brought back into playing condition. A second game couldn’t even be started.
Under a tournament rule adopted last year, the postponements meant the losers’ bracket was abolished.
Albemarle Post 75 and Danville Post 325 remain in the winners’ bracket. Weather and field conditions permitting, the two teams will begin a best-of-three series with a doubleheader today. If a third game is needed, it will be Saturday.
Post 175 had just rallied for six runs in the top of the sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead over Roanoke Post 3 when intense rain forced a halt to play. After the initial squall passed over, Legion personnel and the James City County grounds crew tried to get the field in shape, but in the end decided the conditions did not justify further play.
“The (initial) downpour put the field muddy, wet, with standing water at all the bases,” said Post 39’s William White, the tournament host. “Third base, shortstop, second, first base, in between — there was standing water. The attempt was to get (the water) off, to the point where we were digging holes in the sand and using pumps to pump the water out of them. Then we had another little rain on top of that. . . . It was muddy all over. It was unsafe, unplayable.”
Officially, the 51/2 innings that were played do not exist. The game officially will be recorded as a cancellation. Post 175 coach Eddie Gates thought Mechanicsville’s game could have been completed with a little more work.
“I think with a little bit more work and maybe just a little bit of stay-dry, we could have had (the field) ready and our game finished up,” Gates said. “But, you know, that’s not my call. We just had to go with what (decision) was made and take our lumps. Mother Nature got one over on us today.”
Post 175’s season began two weeks late because of heavy and frequent rain this summer. The team, which could not even practice for much of that time, got off to a rocky start, going 1-2 before winning 17 consecutive games. Post 175 lost the final game in the regular season against the Colonial Heights Post 284 Buccaneers.
Despite Thursday’s disappointment, Gates was happy with the way the season turned out.
“Overall, a great year,” Gates said. “I didn’t know what I was going to have player-wise coming to me, but the ones that did come, absolutely great. I enjoyed every minute of it.”

Albemarle Post 74 sweeps Danville Post 325 to win American Legion State Baseball Tourney today in Williamsburg.

In Williamsburg, the Albemarle Post 74 baseball team is a state champion.
Albemarle capped a dominating run through the American Legion state tournament with a pair of convincing wins over Danville Post 325 on Friday to sweep the best-of-3 series and bring home the state title. Had the teams split Friday's doubleheader, a winner-take-all game would have been played Saturday.
Post 74 ensured no game 3 would be needed, ...
