We are seeing a lot of posts regarding letters for the 05 and 06 players

From my experience a number of things happen at this time of the year and not in any specific order;

01-- at this point in time many coaches are concentrating on the 05 player--they need to fill their immediate needs-- come springtime when they think thay have most of their ducks in a row for the 05 players they will begin to contact the 06 players.

02-- if the player is a stud in either the 05 or 06 class they will begin to be truly flooded with mail and the 05 hopefull will be getting calls from colleges on a regular basis

03-- how do you filter out the "real" and the "unreal" in terms of interest ?? That is not easy--what we try to do with our players is to have them continually update us as to who is calling and writing--knowing this, we can talk with the coaches and perhaps find out how "real" the interest is.In turn we can let coaches know how interested our player is in their school and their baseball program.

04-- for those not receiving letters you thought you would, you should relax--it may not be your time or in reality you may not be the talented player that you and your parents think you are. This is the time when egos get deflated and reality sets in--- the player who thought he was a Division I player is in reality not that type of player

As we tell our players and their parents the proof of the pudding is in the calls and letters--- if 75 % of the calls and letters are Division III schools then the player is most likely a Divsiion III player--the same can be said for all divisions--the mail and calls will tell you the true level of your ability. Of course this based on the premise that the player has gotten the proper exposure in the proper venues.

I hope this helps some of the restless hearts

Thank you for an informative post from someone who is experienced at this. We haven't gotten a lot of mail just yet, but it's very early. What we have gotten has been from D-1 schools, and one D-2. I realize that this early in the process (junior year) you can't tell much of anything by the mail you get. Just to get any is nice. He has a lot of time to prove if he can make it to the next level or not. I hope he can, we all dream of that.

I do have a question....do the D-2's and D-3's only go after kids that they see as not being able to play D-1 ball? Or do they shoot for the moon to see what happens? For lack of a better metaphor, (and please, no one take offense here because I do not intend any) is it like the guy in high school that is not popular and not as handsome going after the homecoming queen? Or is he going after that not as cute, smart, shy girl that sits near him in chemistry class?

I believe that the D-II and D-III coaches go after Division I prospects for a number of reasons

01-- A good coach always believes he has a chance to get a kid who will better his program

02-- They want to be in touch seriously so that if the player does go Division I and is not happy there, the player will have him in mind when he looks to transfer.

03-- Many top notch players do not care about the level-- they want to play ball and get a good education--not every kid is looking to go pro.

I can tell you this for fact: when my son went D-I he had more than just one or two Division II programs who told him he had a spot and a scholarship if he did not like it where he was.
