Hi everybody, I am a 17 year old senior in high school. I am about 5"10" & 150lbs. I am looking to increase the velocity on my pitches. I throw anywhere between 75-80mph. I have constant movement, even on my four-seamer which sinks/tails. I've been told that I have a heavy fastball and I can throw on the line from up to 300ft. I'm confused and would like some advice on why I don't throw harder? Could it be my mechanics? Size? What can I do overall to help me progress?

Hi Alex,
If you can throw on a line (or, more realistically, just in the air) 300 ft., you can throw harder than 80, so something doesn't add up. So there is something about your mechanics on the mound that isn't right or your arm is not healthy. I noticed on a previous post, you were getting it checked out - what were the results? And what does your pitching instructor say about your velo?
Mechanics is your problem
@Cabbage, I went to a pitching instructor during the winter - he played collegiately at Tulane University, pitched in the minors, and is currently an instructor and Chicago Cubs area scout. He said my mechanics were fine and I was given drills to do at home. One of the drills consisted of holding my balance point for three seconds then landing; however, when landing I had to make sure my throwing hand was up along with my glove. So basically getting the arm up as quick as possible. The next drill was where I would also hold my balance point for three seconds, but I would have my arms crossed across my chest then land. That drill helped with distributing my weight well.
I have not gotten my arm checked out. I haven't pitched in an official game since February. I will possibly throw a bullpen to see how I am tomorrow.
He did not say anything about my velo only the movement.
Players don't always make good instructers
Bump!
Please provide drills/regimens to increase velo.
