LUBBOCK, Texas - Sophomore catcher Matt Smith went 2-for-2 with a grand slam and Dustin Richards struckout eight over six innings to help lift Texas Tech to a 7-4 win over **** Roberts in the final game of the Cox Communications Midland Collegiate Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Texas Tech will take a six-game win streak to Tempe, Arizona on Tuesday night as the Red Raiders improve to 9-3 on the young season. **** Roberts fall to 5-3 on the year and has now dropped six straight in the series against Texas Tech.

**** Roberts took a 2-0 lead over the Red Raiders in the top of the second inning and both runs came with two outs in the inning. Back-to-back RBI singles by Pat Warfle and Brendan Duffy plated the two runs for the Golden Eagles.

Texas Tech managed its own two-out rally in the bottom of the third as the Red Raiders took over the lead on grand slam home run by sophomore catcher Matt Smith. The home run marked his third home run of the season and his first career grand slam. Smith's home run was set up by a single by freshman second baseman Willie Rueda and a pair walks issued to Joey Callender and Tyler Reves.

Tech extended its lead to 5-2 with a run in the fourth, but **** Roberts made it a one-run game when pinch hitter Travis DeBondt hit a two-out RBI double in the top of the eighth inning.

Junior right fielder Blair Wilkins gave the Red Raiders a much needed cushion in the bottom of the eighth when he belted a two-run homer to right. The home run was the first of his career in a Texas Tech uniform.





Randy Gattis came entered the game in the seventh in relief of starter Dustin Richardson and in turn picked up his first career save by allowing just one run on two hits over the final three innings. Tech starter Dustin Richardson (2-0) picked up his second win of the week by tossing six solid innings allowing three runs on 10 hits and struckout eight. Nick Jones (2-1) was charged with his first loss of the season for **** Roberts as he gave up five runs on eight hits over seven innings.

Texas Tech will wrap up a four-game road swing on Tuesday night when the Red Raiders pay a visit to the Arizona State Sun Devils in Tempe. First pitch at Packard Stadium is set for 8 p.m. (CT).
