Hi All,

Last night 13 year old son and I were doing long toss. He was working his way back in on long toss and was at around 150 feet when he complained that his elbow was sore. He didn't hear a "pop" and it didn't burn. The elbow area is just sore.

We shut down the long toss and iced when we got home.

Is he pushing the long toss distance too fast? He only tosses twice a week right now, would like to see him increase to three times a week if possible.
He has been off for the past month with no pitching. He wanted to start the long toss before it got too cold weather wise.

As we were bagging the equipment he said that his left elbow is sore also... Now this makes me think that maybe the soreness has more to do with a growth spurt. He is currently 5'9" with size 14 shoes... he is starting to grow into those shoes.

Would you lay off the throwing? How long? Has anyone else's son gone through a growth spurt and had elbow pain?

Thanks for your help.

It is extremely important for a young man to get at least 8 and preferably 12 weeks of "active rest" which means no throwing a baseball, if he is hurt it might be a good time to do it. Now that I think about it why is he wanting to throw a lot if he is going to be shut down soon?

IMO there should be no problem in your son throwing LT a 2-3 times per week. Build up slowly and don't over do it. Mine started as a 12YO and has never had any arm issues.

A great resource for you is:

If he is really serious get him some bands and "thrive on throwing" DVD from:

www.jaegersports.com

Also he must run (break a sweat) stretch and be fully warm before throwing.

Mine is now a 15YO and is 6'3"....only a size 13 though Wink He has never had any elbow pain, he had some mild pains in the back side of his knees and around his feet when he was in a high growth period. I have not heard about elbow pain from growing.

The pain in your son's elbow is telling him that what he is doing is not right.
Pain is different than being sore.
I would shut him down, see a doctor and then do some research on proper throwing programs for 13 year olds or go to an instructor. If you wait until spring and he has hurt his elbow, you will have an issue in the spring to deal with.
Hi All,

Thanks for everyone's reply. His comment is that his elbows (around the inside condyle?) is sore. He doesn't say that it is a sharp stabbing or burning
pain. However, he is terrible about expressing what
hurts and how badly it hurts.

I thought initially he overdid it, until he said that the left elbow felt the same way! So then it sounded more like a growth issue...

This kid wants to pitch all the time. I suggested that he try long toss a couple of times a week to keep his arm in shape and to lay off the pitching until lessons start up this winter.

We are trying to keep his arm healthy by doing Thrower's 10 and long toss... not mess it up!

I think we will have him lay off for a bit and reintroduce the long toss more gradually. I will also talk to the orthopedic doctor as well and see if he concurs.

Thanks for your help.

The young man has a issue RIGHT NOW !!!
I again ask if the pain is in both elbows---without a doubt but it could just well a case of the growth plates maturing which in most cases is a period of rest

I agree he has an issue right now, that is why I suggested seeing a doctor now and not wait until the spring to deal with it. Go back and read.

FWIW, my son at 13 never was on a program like that for mature pitchers (HS, college, beyond). I understand that may not be the way some folks do it now, that's at your descretion. I would make sure his throwing and conditioning program is age specific. And keep active doing other things.
