I, like you, am in the " I like long-throwing camp."

To me, there would appear to be two purposes for this activity. For Pitchers, like in the Oswalt clip you attached, it's a great pre-pitching warm-up. The same applies to a position player preparing his arm for the rigors of a baseball game.

The other reason for "long-throwing," IMO, would be to challenge the muscles and connecting ligaments to enhance strength. This is the purpose for which I would be less concerned than many about the term "tilting" or any action that the gurus are construing as movement other than those that are 100% pitching specific. Long-throwing, in this context, would be accomplished a few times a week in conjunction with the other throwing activities but geared to conclude with maximum effort.

In summary, I think shorter distances, with step and follow through actions, are great for loosening, lengthening and warm-up activities prior to more stressful throwing. Secondly, I would incorporate real looong-throwing, periodically, to continually tax the arm/shoulder area for peak gains while being less concerned with absolutely perfect upright body posture and throwing mechanics. If I can hurl it 300' (I could throw a softball that far in high school) from consistent training, then that 250' throw to 3b or Home can be made with less "tilting" for distance. JMO
