Son was going to D111 but $ issues are forcing us to find other options. We are currently considering a very good JUCO program but have heard some colleges may still have some scholarship money for pitching. Son has 28 ACT score top top 10% class 4.2 gpa. Is 6'1" 175lbs RHP 85-86 mph with slider, curve, changup all 4 throws strikes consistently. Pitched Perfect game in Sectional championship and almost had another giving up 1 hit in 7ip facing 22 batters so has very good control--great kid very quiet hates to lose. Send me a PM if anyone can help out. JUCO we are looking at is not a bad option just rustling the bushes--thanks Smile

Baseball Dad, you may have already followed this approach, but - who is your son's best advocate (outside of the family)? High school coach, summer ball coach, pitching instructor? If they are well-connected, ask them if they will make a few calls to see if there are other options out there.

Our son had little interest from anybody other than JUCOs before his summer ball coaches made some calls and he ended up getting interest from at least 4 Div. I programs.

Good luck to your son!
I found that the reality is that all those colleges do is point a radar gun at pitchers and look at the number. Nothing else matters. To them, RHP's at 85-86 mph are a dime a dozen. Should not be that way, but that's reality.

Hopefully you'll have the same experience my son had. He was an LHP throwing 83-84 mph. No one wanted him except for two schools. He goes to one of those two schools, then pitches against a school that turned him down because he could not throw hard enough and "was not a D1 prospect". It was a mid week game (he was a freshman at the time), so he only got to pitch five innings, but the team that turned him down got exactly ZERO baserunners in those 5 innings. That was sweet to watch.

I hope you get the same experience. However be aware of two things that I found:

1. The jump from high school baseball to D1 is a WHOLE lot more than you think it is.

2. The competition for spots on those teams is a WHOLE LOT more than you think it is.

Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for replies really appriciate it Smile. My son will be going to Joliet Junior College we believe for right now its our best choice. We see it as a great oppurtunity for him. With his grades, ACT score, work ethic, and great support from his summer coach and hopefully his knew college coach he will wind up at the right school for his talent wether it is D1 11 111 NAIA. We beleive his baseball talent should land him some $ to help pay for college--time will tell.
I can think of a ton of colleges that would love to have (legitimate) 85-86mph RHP. If he had three other pitches that were quality and he threw EVERYTHING for strikes, sounds like he would dominate just about any level. Coaches do recognize this. You can subtract a few mph and a pitch (and claims of perfect strikethrowing Wink) and I had plenty of nice choices. Best of luck, sounds like you've made a decision. Living in Joliet should be fun.
I played for Wayne King at JJC. Great man, great program, teaches the game the right way. Nobody wanted me coming out of high school, I was redshirting at a local NAIA school and I made the transfer to JJC and it was the best choice I could have ever made as a baseball player and a person. Coach King turned me from no one wanting me to a Division 1 scholarship (75%, which is actually really good for baseball) I can't say enough good things about the man. He turned me into a ball player and a better person. You made the right choice. Your son will definetly get seen and move on from JUCO. And he will more than likely get to play in the D3 JUCO world series, which is an awesome experience too. Best of Luck to You!
