I have heard there are ways to make an ash wood bat harder. Does anyone know of any of these?

I have heard of two...
1. Burn the wood, do not light the bat on fire but keep the flame under the wood to heat it up.
2. Put pine tar on the barrel of the bat and let it harden.
Both of these methods should make a wood bat harder, but I do not know if the bats are allowed to be used in a game then.

The traditional method was to bone the bat. The bat was rubbed with a cow bone, another bat, or a similar hard round object to compress the wood fibers. It's not done much these days because the bats usually have a finish on them.
Rub the bat along a iron fence post at the "ball park". Do not use a painted post, the paint will rub into the bat.
If you have a glass coke bottle, place the bat on the floor and rub. Develops wrists and forearms [2 for 1 motion].
There are three grades of ash wood.
The ML players receive the top grade [seasoned longer]. minor league the next grade and retail store the lowest grade.
