Strike three on the batter, catcher misses the ball and the umpire is hit. What is the call. The umpire never lets the ball hit the ground. Hands the ball back to the catcher and he throws down to first to get the batter out
I saw something similar a few years ago in a HS JV game. Ball four got away from the catcher, went to the backstop. The lazy catcher just stood there as the runner took first, held his hand out for the umpire to give him another ball.
The umpire gave him one! The opposing coach registered his dismay....
IMO, Oregonump is correct, even though the umpire is considered in play, once he hands the ball to the catcher, he than has assisted the catcher and now changes the play to interference.

Actually play is killed a little sooner...once the umpire handles a live ball, play is dead. Put the batter/runner on first.
