I wonder if Manny is doing this by himself or he'd rather sign and is being advised by his agent. This is absurd. Who wants to sign someone like Manny for more than a year anyway? The guys clearly turns it on when he is looking free agency in the face. Its the only way to guarantee his production.
I think the Dodger offer is great---one year at 25 mil and Manny becomes a free agent at the end of the year when hopefully the economy will be recovering---makes sense to me
I thought that he would take the $25 mill offer. That way he saved face by making $5 million more then he would have if he didn't force his way out of Boston...his option was for $20 million in boston for 2009..he wanted a $100 million deal..well he has that (average wise) with this deal. I'm surprised he shot it down...we will see what Boras can come up with....cutting it close in my opinion.
Manny hasn't noticed the long list of guys who have not yet signed. Nor, apparently, the economy ---- how many additional bums would his signing have to put in seats to justify the salary?
Pujols was interviewed the other day encouraging the Cardinals to sign Manny (wipes tears of laughter from eyes). The very thought of an OF that's two-thirds Ramirez and Duncan is just too horrible to contemplate....unless Manny can guarentee to drive in about 200 runs.
Perhaps it's just because I've been watching a lot of MLBTV and that scroll goes on forever, but is the number of unsigned FA particularly long this year?
It's easy to overestimate the his intellectual horsepower. This is the same guy who put a $2,000 grill on eBay while he was making $168 million from the RS.
While not being a union backer I also thought that collusion between owners is just as despicable.
Until now.
I will excuse baseball ownership if they would ever be found guilty of ganging together in order to knock the prim-a-dona players/agents off their perch. There comes a time when a line has to be drawn in the sand.
If I was a team looking to buy him, I would be leery of anything other than a year to year contract becasue of the bridge he burned in Boston where he publicly stopped performing when he wanted to be somewhere else. Too much money changing hands to take that chance. Sorry, Mr. Boras.
