deldad,

Last I knew, Gregg Wikerak was still the varsity head coach over at Marian Cental. He seems to field a pretty competitive team every year and seems to give many of the Fox Valley conference teams good competition. I'm sure if you contact Gregg he would be happy to talk to you about the Marian Central program. You can gather a smidgen of info here at the Marian Central Athletics website as well as from their Spring Sports 2007 pdf. The IHSA website lists Coach Wikerak's email as gwikierak@sbcglobal.net.

Gregg is also very involved in the Crystal Lake Bomber organization (president I believe...). Here is a link to Coach Wik's bio on the Bomber website. Also from the same Bomber website, his email contact is wik@clbombers.com.

FYI.. My son never personally played for Coack Wik but I've know him for a number of years since both of our sons were in little league.
Coach B, a parent can talk to anyone at anytime with any school or administrator. It is not a violation if the parent contacts the school and staff. Just doing background on a program which any parent should do, is not in violation of any rules.
The key is that the parents must approach the school, furthermore the coach can then sit down with the family, with the kid present and explain the offerings of the program.
Coach B -
I was going to say something similar to Bergen - we've been told the coach can talk to the parents all he wants, as long as the player isn't approached. We were "chatted up" at a local batting cage by the coach of a private school (who shall remain nameless) and he basically said the same thing- I can talk to you, I just can't talk to him (motioning at son who was hitting in the cage at the time). I'm not going to claim I know the rules (in fact, I would have to guess with your background you know them better than most) - I'm just saying that's the way it's interpreted around here.
It is amazing the differences in areas and this topic. Also, there is a huge difference in how this is explained per conversations with IHSA etc. Therefore, I retract my statement. In our school, we refer everyone to the AD. No coach talks to anyone until they live in our district. Otherwise, we'd be charged with recruiting. Again, I retract my statement.
Some of the following are taken right out of IHSA By Laws.

3.073 It shall also be a violation of this rule to induce or attempt to induce or encourage any prospective student to attend any member school for the purpose of participating in athletics even when special remuneration or inducement is not given.

Schools are not prohibited from conducting academic recruitment programs, programs which may include information concerning the school’s extracurricular offerings. However, such recruitment programs must be designed to provide an overview of the academic and extracurricular programs offered by a school and are not to be used as a subterfuge for recruiting students for athletic purposes. Such general recruitment programs permissible under this rule shall be carried out under the following guidelines:

• With the exception of an open house conducted at a member school, no member of a school’s coaching staff may presentor distribute the school’s information to students not yet in high school unless they are representing all phases of the entire high school program at official junior high functions such as high school nights, fairs, days or visits.
• Any information presented or distributed shall be limited to the academic and extracurricular offerings provided by the school. The information may include a description of the athletic facilities available at the school.
• Any information presented or distributed shall not imply, in any manner, that the member school’s athletic program is
better or more accomplished than any other member school’s athletic program.
• Any information presented or distributed shall not imply, in any manner, that it would be more advantageous for a
prospective student athlete to attend a member school over any other school because of its extracurricular programs.
• Information may be presented or distributed only at an open house conducted at a member school or at a school housing
grades below the ninth from which the member school can normally expect enrollment.

This is from the Illustrations section:

Q. If a family is moving into the area and has stopped by the athletic office because they are “shopping” for a school,
may specifics about a particular sport be discussed?
A. Yes, provided “specifics” includes only factual information and the family initiates the contact. However, the family
must be directed to the administrative or admissions office. (By-law 3.043)
...so now I'll have to take my East Alton Wood River High School Letter Jacket off and let it sit. Oh well, I might still get a deal on the C.P.O. jackets. Wow did that last sentence tell my age.

BTW, I would wear my Cardinal's Jacket but I've decided to boycott them. Yes, that lasted just about 4 innings. I turned on the game (in car on radio) just in time to hear that the feared Kip Wells had walked his 4th hitter in two innings. Next pitch off the wall in centerfield. Boycott is on again until Wells is traded/cut and Reyes haS to stop ironing the bill of his cap and actually look like a ball player. (At least if you can't play, look the part!) Boy talk about getting off subject!! I APOLOGIZE.
