As an aside and not to be a wiseguy but someone mentioned recently about doing your homework,
as in research on the internet, before asking questions---I agree totally--check out the schools on your own before you ask generic questions- do your homework and then your questions can be specific and to the point--


Another thing--if you ask questions and get answers drop by and let people know you read the posts and got the answers you sought

I second TR's assessment that Marietta is an elite D3 baseball school. They have won several national championships and produced some excellent pro players such as Terry Mulholland and Kent Tekulve. An ex-hs teammate of my son's is starting his sophmore year there. He was a great high school player and had a hard time getting playing time as a freshman. He told me they run a very disciplined program. Another top Ohio program is Wooster that went deep in the playoffs last year and you may want to consider them as well.

New Pirate (former Dodger) manager Jim Tracy is also a Marietta alum. This small school with very good academics fields a D-I caliber team nearly every year. That being said, as an elite D-III baseball school that can offer no athletic scholarships, Marietta has a HUGE roster -- the "over-recruiting" issue can be, well, an ISSUE in regard to playing time.

Does anyone know if the overrecruiting at Marietta still occurs? Their recruiting coach told me it is a thing of the past.
He claimed that the '05 incoming fall class was only about 20 players.
What is a normal # of recruited players at a D3?

Though Marietta has changed coaches recently, I still feel that 20 "recruited" freshmen is a lot.

It is only alot if you doubt your ability to be the best talent in that 20 player pool.

Confidence in yourself is key

My brother in law played and graduated from Marietta. They won several ncaa championships. He is now a senior budget anylist at a large florida hostpital making the big $$. TR -- I agree completely. The point I guess I was trying to make is that some folks don't understand the difference between being "recruited" to a DIII school and being signed by a DI school. DI players are usually "slotted" into playing a certain position, either as a starter or a reserve player. But the freshmen that go to a DIII school like Marietta are sometimes surprised to find that they are part of a "cattle-call" tryout where anything can (and does)happen. I know many players who have been disappointed in their experience because of this. On the other hand, if you get a chance to play at Marietta, it's probably one of the best DIII programs around.

That is the situation I am trying to be prepared for if it is the case...having son pick this college over another to find that 10 other guys were told that they were also "high on the college's list" of preferred players for the position he is most likely to play.

Should we expect that at all of the D3s? Or is it more common at the elite programs (where they need to look at more talent in the fall to find the best players and are able to bring in a lot of players because of the caliber and status of their program.)

Had the pleasure of being with Coach Holawaty from Eastern CT STate last night at a local HS game-- they may well be the dark horse in the event--also watch Wheaton (MA)--looks like a great event, as usual

Hampton HS of Pittsburgh came down to VA to play a few games early in the spring. Their catcher was a BIG guy with tremendous power. I was told he was heading to Marietta next year, so look for more good things from behind the plate for them in the future.

Marietta won their 4th DIII World Series on Tuesday beating Wheaton College 7-2. MC went 4-0 in the double elimination tourney.

Congrats to 3rd year coach and former MC player Brian Brewer on his first championship.
