Mariners call up Chris Taylor

That is great stuff.  Where is he from and what school did he go to?

 

He attended Cox High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia.

His dad (also named Chris Taylor) used to post here, using his real name as his screen name.  Sad to say we don't see him much any more.  I hope he reads all the well wishes here.

 

I read somewhere not long ago -- might've been in Baseball America -- that Chris was doing very, very well moving up the ladder and was regarded as a "surprise."  My thought was, "why is this a surprise?"  The kid was a big time contributor on UVA's earlier CWS teams and always a winner. 

 

Seems like Seattle believes in its UVA draftees.  Maybe CT will have some alumni company some day.

Chris- I played with your son in the summer of 2010. Great to see this. Huge congrats to him and your family.

I was one of the few players on the team that didn't move on to pro ball. 

Extremely talented club and a ton of fun the entire summer. The fan support was great. 

 

Fun fact about that summer, for others: Chris Jr. was playing elsewhere and our starting 3B went down with an injury. Our owner told us he found a replacement, and moved our starting SS over to 3B for this "new guy". We were shocked, as our SS was a very good player and we felt that he shouldn't be moved off the position. Well, the starting SS is currently playing 3B in AAA and the "new guy" played SS for the Seattle Mariners last night. Shows us what we knew!

 

As a pitcher, Chris was a pleasure to have behind me at shortstop. More importantly, he was a pleasure to have as a teammate. Congrats once again.

 

It's a good year for the Beach!  I just noticed -- though apparently it's old news -- that Neil Ramirez is up with the Cubs and doing quite well.

 

Ramirez was a million dollar bonus baby out of one of the Beach area high schools in 2007.  Gave up a Ga. Tech commitment to sign and had a long slog through the Rangers' minors before he found himself the "player to be named later" in last summer's Matt Garza trade.

Midlo you jinxed Ramirez...got optioned shortly after your post. I'm glad to hear he'd been up though...I remember the first time I saw Ramirez. Kempsville was playing in state tourney in Richmond. Can't remember if it was vs. Godwin (Justin Bristow) or Hermitage (Scott Taylor). Anyway he was a sophomore and was dealing. Afterwards one of the scouts that had been there to see Taylor or Bristow went and spoke to him and told him to take care of that arm. Great to hear he made it and has played well.

Wow, how do you option a guy performing as he was?

 

But then, that's the Cubs for you.

BTW, Chris Jr.'s former college teammate, Phil Gosselin, is getting his second call-up to Atlanta. 

 

No wonder those teams made the CWS!

 

(Folks will remember Gosselin for his first inning HR off Strasburg in the regional win.  He actually grew up in PA but given his UVA time, we'll claim him!)
