If teams can pay out that kind of money, that means they have it. Who should make all that money, they owners? The ownership groups? Why not the players? They're just playing to the market.
When we hear an owner is a billionaire, why do we begrudge one of his employees for getting their piece of the pie?
The Yanks have a better team with Tex, however, how much better remains to be seen.
They lost Giambi and Abreu's offense. They are replacing it with Swisher and Tex. Nady is an average OF and Damon will age further. Jeter will still be great but is steadily losing range. Posada is questionable defensively so he may have to DH. Their Of-ers are below average. Cano may hit, but they wanted to move him to the Of because his defense is subpar. If they don't sign another starter, they will finish in the pack. A-rod may yet get another chance at 1-2 rbi's in the playoffs.
All the redsox did was save 180 million, keep their draft picks, get Bay, who is soooo underated, he's a legit 30hr 100rbi .290-300 ave guy who can play defense, run the bases and is a class act. What will he cost, 7 mil?
My opinion is that this is actually embarrassing for the Yankees. Too spoiled rich kids trying to imitate their father. I believe Hank & Hal will destroy the Yankees over the next 5-10 years.
Buying a fantasy team usually doesn't work. When the Yankees were winning all those WS they did it mainly with homegrown talent supplemented with free agents. Now they are doing just the opposite. Ruined the minors and buying players to fill massive holes.
Even as a Yankee hater from South Jersey I believe the Yankees are a special franchise. Frick and Frack are making a mockery of the team. I can't wait to hear what Mike Francesa has to say.

Yanks will be better because they invested in the starting pitching they needed and will rely on mostly home-grown talent on the backend of rotation and pen.
Losing Giambi and Abreu is good because Giambi's a stiff and Abreu is a soft player who has a wall allergy. Nady will be an upgrade for Abreu and Yanks now have a real firstbaseman in 8yrs which is a better hitter and defejnse makes pitching and infield better. Don't underestimate Tisshera's worth. He helps Yanks big time. I wish Yanks would dump lazy Robinson Cano because I never liked him from day one but since they locked him in, they gotta straighten him and his act out.
And Joe Girardi was the wrong guy for the job. For an ex-catcher, he did a lousy job last year with the pitching he did have and is overrated as a manager. But he's gonna get a shot again because yanks got killed last year with injuries in key spots so the jury's still out on him. He's got a much improved team this year so they should win the division and get to the World Series.
Remember this for those who claim Yanks buy titles..Yanks sock their money right back into the team unlike mmany owners who pocket the money.
What are these other organizations doing with the free handout of millions they get from the Yanks for going over the cap? Instead of worrying how the Yanks run their team, fans should be sending a message to their own teams that they need to do whatever it is they need to do to compete. Yankees obviously have the fan base and the revenue stream as well as the Red Sox and the Mets. Of course, they'll complain about the Yankees too.. The same team who shelled out $50M and outbid the Yanks just for the rights to talk to Dizuke Matsusaka

I'll bet Teixeira will be successful. The question will be is he Mr. May or Mr. October when the pressure is on. I yawned at the signing of Burnett. Who's going to catch the ball? Every Yankee except Teixeira is defensively mediocre or in decline.
My concern with the Sox is not who the Yankees signed. My concern is both Ortiz and Lowell remaining healthy and productive. It's a big "if" given their ages and coming off injuries. If they're healthy the Sox have it all over the Yankees pitching-wise and defensively.
But, would someone please send a thank you card to Schilling for the last two championships, duct tape his mouth and send him packing. Curt, it's over!
