DMN Player of the week Michael Reed

What he did: Reed was 5-for-8 with two doubles, a home run, seven RBIs, three runs and a stolen base to lead McKinney North to two wins, clinching at least a share of the District 9-4A title. Reed, who recently moved from leadoff to third in the lineup, went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in a 12-0 win Tuesday over Frisco. He went 2-for-4 with four RBIs, including a three-run homer in the first inning, in a 13-5 win Thursday over Lake Dallas.

Michael Reed The stats: Reed is hitting .453 with nine doubles, two triples, two home runs, 21 RBIs and 29 runs. His on-base percentage is .517.

Who is he? Reed is a 5-9, 160-pound senior second baseman who signed with Grayson County College.

He said it: "I was really seeing the ball well, and I started working earlier in the count. At leadoff, I was trying to work the count and get on base. In the three hole, I'm trying to move runners over and get some RBIs."

Coach said it: "He's somebody that we've been able to depend on all year." – Brandon Milam

Did you know? Reed's week had a rough end. He left the Lake Dallas game in the sixth inning after falling on his shoulder following a collision at second base. He said he had some soreness but doesn't expect to miss any games.

First time I saw Michael play was last summer in OKC. He managed to hit two long balls off my son in one game Eek My son really enjoyed playing with him last fall and looks forward to playing with him this summer.

SPOTLIGHT Corey Sartor, Trinity

Trinity southpaw Corey Sartor was hoping just to help his team win Friday against Coppell.

He wasn't thinking about throwing a one-hitter.

That was the result, though, for Sartor (3-2), who pitched a complete game and hit a double in the Trojans' 4-1 victory, helping them remain in a tie for third in District 6-5A. When it came time to celebrate, players didn't exactly hold back their emotions.

"Very nuts," Sartor said about the scene. "Beating a top team like that is awesome."

Trinity coach Dave Evartt said Sartor mixed his pitches well and was helped by several ground balls.

"Early on, we knew he was in control, but you never know with Coppell's lineup," Evartt said. "It takes once through the batting order for them to get comfortable. But they were never comfortable in the batter's box."

Sartor's best pitch that night wasn't his fastball or curveball. It was his changeup, which he calls his No. 3 pitch. With the wind blowing in, Sartor said his curveball had less density, and, while his fastball might have moved more, it was flat.

The only hit he gave up was a bunt single.

"It was a good bunt though," Sartor said. "He put it down in a good spot. I give him credit for the bunt. But you hate to have that one hit come back that way."

With a one-hitter to his credit, Sartor said he doesn't feel anymore pressure from opposing teams that might pay more attention to him now.

"I'm just going to go out there and play the game I love," he said.

Corey played with my son on the Heat. Great player, great kid. Glad to see he's "back in the fold" and playing for the Marshal's this summer.
