Friday a memo was released by the NCAA saying

"This memo serves as the NCAA’s official notice that the decertification process has been triggered for the Marucci CAT5 33-inch model. Effective immediately and until further notice, these bats will not be allowed for use in any NCAA baseball competition".

Does anyone know what this means for the HS bat?

I watched a JV contest last night between Newman Smith and Nimitz and NS had a couple in the rotation.
Do the umps receive a text message to inform them quickly when some rule changes occur, or is there an additional process to make the bat officially outlawed and get the word out to officials?

Exactly... Just cause it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck... doen't really mean it's a duck... if a batter comes up to bat with one, I'll check it if the other coach wants me to or if I notice that it is a 33

A true possibility. However I would wager that nearly 90% of HS varsity players swing a 33". Would also wager it becomes an issue at some point this spring for someone.
I agree it is a limited amount of kids that have the 33. At my son's school counting JV and Varsity there was only one kid swinging the 33 Marucci.... Guess who's kid..lol.. Mine..

I sent off the bat Wednesday back to Marucci and thinking of getting the Black replacement. I feel they don't give very good options but when you can't use a bat why keep it. I am hoping that when they receive the bat and contact me they will have a better option than the 100.00 upgrade.

I contacted Marucci by phone when I saw the ruling. I bought his bat directly from the website so they had my information when they called me back. I was basically told to send it back and once they get it they would call me with "options" since I was displeased. Will post when I find out what is decided.

Did they mention anything about re-certification?

Why just the 33? Aren't the other sizes made the same way?

What I was told this weekend was that the walls of the 33 are apparently 1/100 of an inch thinner than they are supposed to be.

One of the teams we were playing in the tournament last weekend was swinging a CAT 5. When I questioned the umpire about it (it was in the game before we played) he told me that it was the CAT 5 squared and it was a different bat than the one that was banned. I told him that they are one in the same...he told me I was wrong...so I pulled out my phone and showed him on the baseball express website.

Moral of the story...there is lots of information out there and not everyone knows whats correct and what is wrong. Make sure you have your ducks lined up in a row if you are going to challenge a bat.
I heard that the 33/30 Cat5 was in such demand (most common bat size), that Marucci used an outside source to keep up with the production and the outside source did not keep/meet the specs necessary for the BBCOR to stay in compliance without Marucci's knowledge.

That's why the other bat sizes of the Cat5 were not effected.

After testing on a very small sample it was found that the batted exit speed did not meet what is now required per BBCOR standard measures and was banned.
Had to almost put on the boxing mitt's to get results out of Marucci. However end the end they took care of my son. Sent the bat back Wednesday the 22nd, they got it that Friday. Didn't hear from this till the next Tuesday. We had decided on the new Black bat and was expecting it Thursday. Thursday I receive a new call asking how I would like to handle the bat exchange. I was about to "explode" when they said "sorry we lost your paperwork" after they had insured the bat would be here last Thursday for my sons game. Was told "hmmm, call you right back"...

Shortly after I received a call back from the same guy (was shocked it was the same guy) and he had came up with a solution. They contacted a local sports store and had them pull a bat for me to swing by and grab. All I had to do is show my license and out the door I went.

All in all they did take care of us. Just the communication and situation wasn't that great. They customer service tech told me they had received over 1500 bats and expected double that last week.

If you don't hear from them, just keep calling. And don't call the number on the return page, call the main number. You get better results.

Best of luck all that have them in for returns.

1. 34/31 or 33/30 black and white Team Marucci bat and 1 Professional Cut wood bat
2. 3 Professional Cut wood bats
3. 32/29 or 31/28 Marucci Black (If you are exchanging a Marucci Black only)

Where did you get your information? The website and customer service says a notification is forthcoming and NFHS has at this time not de-certified the bat.
Marucci response on the site:

NCAA RULING
June 6, 2012

Today we were notified that the 34-inch Cat 5² (MBC2) and 33 and 34-inch Black (MCB11) were decertified by the NCAA. We do not agree with this decision and believe the testing systems currently in place are flawed.

Our customers, both professional and amateur players, demand the very best and have come to expect a level of service from Marucci that is second to none.

In response to the NCAA’s ruling, we will provide all owners of the bats in question a comprehensive return program as proof of our commitment to you. Details on this program will be announced soon.

We thank you for your patience and support as we respond to the NCAA’s latest ruling and testing systems.

I was given the same information from Marucci. Very disappointing. My son does not need any more wood bats and is not interested in a "team" bat. I am demanding my money back.
