Is this a mass e-mail or is it more of an individual interest. It never talks about camps or other stuff like that. Have others received this?

I hope your fall is going great so far! The Stanford University Baseball program is truly honored to have the privilege of recruiting you!

Since you are in your junior year of high school and this is our initial contact with you, we would like to learn more about you. We have set up an online form that will help us gather this information. Our form is called the STANFORD BASEBALL PROSPECT INFORMATION FORM. It can be found at this web address:

If you think your son fits the Stanford profile be sure to fill out the forms. He should be in the top 5% of his class academically and end up being one of the top 250 kids in the US athletically in his position. As others have said they cast a wide net early but it keeps filtering down until they pick the 10 or so kids who get to attend the school and make the team. There are some posters here who's kids have played there so it happens.

One clue: is there an Unsubscribe link at the bottom of the email? That tells you that the sender has used a 3rd party email service provider (ESP) to deliver the mail. Senders will use an ESP for two reasons: (1) it's pretty damn easy to send an email to a large DB, and (2) they can track who opened the email and who clicked on the email.

Now a sender can personalize email sent via an ESP, but only to the degree that it merges data into the email template, and that normally is the first name, last name. You can get creative with personalization, e.g., HS name, position, summer team, etc. But it takes some work to personalize full sentences and paragraphs: not impossible, but not worth the effort.

So as you receive these emails, bear in mind that the sender can track your response, thus if the sender is one of your targeted schools, you'll definitely want to open and click.
