CD,
You are so right about the mental part and the need to concentrate, focus and control your emotions.
This is the second very good thread started today in my view.
Please don't remove it.
These two threads and realizing one of our long time posters(one of those quiet ones) son is one of the very best players in college baseball, with the journey that everyone would admire makes this one fine day for me on the HSBBW.

I remember hearing a MLB pitcher say he played tons of golf in the off season to keep sharp mentally.

That pitcher was John Smoltz.

I saw an interview where Tiger said Smoltz is the best non-professional he's ever played in golf...and the only one who walked away with any of Tiger's money. Tiger said he thought Smoltz could be successful on the Sr. Tour.

Phil Mickelson won.
He played great.
He deserves the headlines.

Tiger is a fraud.
He doesnt deserve the headines.
I wouldnt believe anything Tiger says - ever.
He's proven what he is all about.

I would have to agree with that. All you had to do is watch the interviews after each golfer finished. It's pretty clear to me Tiger's not going to change. It was the "new tiger" before the tournament and the "old tiger" after.

Phil...nothing but class. Boy what a difference a year makes in what your view of these two guys is.

Congrats Phil !

Would you believe what A-Rod says?

Tiger: Busted for cheating. Admits it. Goes to counseling.

A-Rod: Busted for cheating. Denies it. Then leaves wife.
Does it really matter if we believe Tiger or not? I could careless honestly about his personal life. Its his business not mine. If I watch him play golf its because I like to see a guy play a game that can play it really well. Its not because I want to see a "great person" play a game that can play it really well.

People buy into these images that are created of sports stars. Folks they are human with the same problems and faults in their personal lives that many other people have. They simply have a gift to play a sport or game very very well. They are built up to be something bigger than others. They are not. They are simply other human beings that can play a game or a sport very very well. It does not make them any more special or in some cases as special as others who we come in contact with on a daily basis.

If you put someone up on a pedastal because they are really good at a sport or game and because the media portrays them as something special as well and then they LET YOU DOWN you are the one with issues imo. Come on they are just a person with a gift to do something we enjoy watching , nothing more nothing less.

I wouldnt walk across the street to see Tiger Woods and meet him as a person. Why? He couldnt hold many of the peoples jocks I know in life and have known. Now would I walk across the street to see him hit a driver? Yes , unless there was a baseball game going on at the same time I could be at.
I don't have any pity on him. Trust me I don't at all. He was put on that pedastal by the media. He just ran with it like anyone probably would. Athletes , Movie Stars , Entertainers are all put on that pedastal. People go Ga Ga over them and believe they are bigger than life. Then they show us they are just human and people are let down.

He can play the hell out of golf. Congrats your a helluva golfer. Outside of that whats the big deal?

A few of my friends and I started golfing after Tiger's first Masters run years ago. He brings a little excitement to the game and brought interest to the sport to those of us that felt it could be quite boring at times. I appreciate the fist pump and emotion that he exhibits on the course, and I wish more golfers had that tenacity. With that said, I agree with Coach May, I wouldn't waste my time to walk across the street to visit with him. He's a great golfer and a tremendous athlete, but other than that, he's a human being that still has some issues.

I think that Phil Mickelson should be receiving a lot of love. Jim Nantz made a good comment regarding Phil's lack of tournament wins the last few months while Tiger has been gone...The man has a few things on his mind, like the fact that his wife and mother are both fighting breast cancer. The hug between him and his wife afterwards was moving. I took off to hit with my son, so I missed Phil's interview and the Green Jacket ceremony, but I heard it was nice.
I think it's game on between Tiger and Phil. I believe the old assumption every tournament is Tiger's to win and Phil's to lose is over. I think Phil's going to give Tiger ALL he can handle and then some.

The way Phil has handled his family difficulty vs Tiger creating one is night and day. I hope Phil's bandwagon gets a lot more crowded...he deserves it.
Never liked Tiger as a person, but I understand how the intensity helps him be a great golfer. Jack Nicklaus was much the same way on the course. I always root for someone to beat Tiger, but I'm also hoping he's in contention because I'd rather see Els or Mickelson beat Tiger than each other. Unfortunately I'm sure we'll see Tiger beating them more often than not in the future.

While Tigers wears his intensity on his sleeve I'm a firm believer that any competitive athlete who is passionate about his sport has basically the same level of intensity. I'm more impressed with the quality athlete who funnels his intensity in a positive manner.

Besides, because people wear their intensity in different manners, who's to say Tigers intensity is more than any others? Maybe he's just more talented, more often

I've been tired of the Tiger hype for years and only use him as an example of how NOT to act and how NOT to treat people.
