When you think basketball in Montgomery County, you might think coach Harwood and Magruder. Think top quality amateur play; again Magruder; its drama department one of the best in the state. But put baseball and Magruder in the same breath and you get a laugh.
Not anymore.
First year Magruder manager Bob Maxey, who is currently a teacher at BCC High School, and whose son is the starting catcher at University of Maryland, took over a program that wasn't.
Maxey, who has an impressive baseball resume, has proved the point that good managing and mentoring can indeed make a difference.
The difference has been impressive victories over ranked Damascus and Sherwood, thus clinching their division's title for the first time in twenty plus years.
If you wonder why you haven't heard about the major upsets in the local papers, Maxie could care less about the accolades. Instead, he cares about building a program and taking the Magruder Colonels to the next level.
Included in the rebuilding program is Magruder's JV team. Made up of all freshmen, with the exception of one player, the JV Colonels are also racking up the victories behind first year skipper Brian Yerger. His intense practices and fundamental approach are helping contribute to Maxie's rebuilding effort.
