medicine ball rotations, wood chops, diagonal wood chops, rotational throws, squat & throws, granny throws... Medicine balls are great for developing explosive power! The key is to keep the ball light enough that you can explode with it. I keep all of my ball players under 10 pounds and most of them under 8 pounds for all of our drills.

The following link (scroll down toward the bottom) shows one of our Minor Leaguers performing our favorite drill for pitchers, the Med. Ball Pitchers Throw! http://www.baseballstrength.com/Members_Articles

Gotta agree with CoachDan. Our son went to a Cal Poly summer camp, and was shown several medicine ball drills to help with strength and velocity. Coach Jerry Weinstein has all the Poly pitchers doing it, and swears by it. Of course you have to have your son "buy into it". Our son certainly has. Alot more strength, he also uses J-Bands. Good luck
We usually have our ball players work for a certain time limit as opposed to a specific number of reps. We look at the typical plays of the position and add a few seconds to get the working time limit. For pitchers we will do 10-15 seconds worth of work followed by 60-90 seconds rest.

One of our pitchers favorite drills is 3 or 4 MB pitchers throws followed by a sprint to cover first base.

Another trick that we use for pitchers is playing a 4 or 5 inning game. We assume an average of 15 pitches per inning. Each pitch is an explosive MB throw followed by a sprint or agility drill. 10-12 seconds later we repeat the same drill until all "pitches have been thrown for the inning. Between innings they get 2-4 minutes rest as needed. The next inning will be a different throw followed by a different speed/agility drill.

The key is to be creative but be controlled. There is nothing more dangerous than losing control while throwing MB's around. And one absolute No-No is this - Never catch MB's on the fly. Your fingers are valuable and don't need to be broken!

Hope that sparks some creativity! If you have any other questions feel free to drop me a line at CoachDan@BaseballStrength.com.
