UPDATE#2:MERCER BEATS MIAMI 8-5 HANDING HURRICANES BACK-TO-BACK LOSSES TO BEGIN 2007 SEASON!Feb 3 (Sat.)

Looks like those Mercer Bears are for real. That's quite a feat going into Mark Light Stadium in Miami and upsetting the Hurricanes like that, two days in a row.

There is a reasonable bit of parity within the top 100 teams, especially over a short series. Team quality is alot closer than in football or basketball. I don't think it is much of an upset. The Mercer folks probably disagree though.

LA Tech beat Arkansas 9-2 yesterday also.

I have these same suspicions about parity in that teams appear closer in baseball than possibly in the other sports. I agree with the sentiment however that the big seperator between the top programs and others is depth.

One series I followed this weekend was UCLA versus Winthrop. On Friday night, Winthrop pitched their All-American sophmore yet still lost a heart breaker 2-1 on a late inning error. I figured it was going to be a long weekend for them after that but see they bounced back for a win yesterday. It will be interesting to see who wins the series.

Another team that has caught my eye early is Univeristy of San Diego. They opened up strong last weekend against Cal Poly and have followed that up nicely with their showing against Texas this weekend.

I love the fact that these games are not played on paper Smile

Miami was missing a top starter. Whether that made a difference, not sure.

Mercer is a very good team, not afraid to play against the best, they took a game away from Clemson last year.

Miami will come around, they have what many teams don't, an experienced coach who has just about seen it all.
