I am on a softball website that has a forum section for buying/selling/trading new and used bats & equipment. Its very useful, especially for trying out different bats without the expense of buying them new, or if you just want to get rid of your old equipment. I think the same thing would be a good idea for this site. Here is the section on the softball website:

Would anyone else want this?

Sounds like a cool idea.
For those with used baseball (or softball) stuff you would like to donate to a worthy cause - consider Roberto's Kids Roberto's Kids Blurb.
Steve Pindar, the guy who started this years ago, is committed to supporting baseball around the world by shipping "gently used" bats, balls, gloves, hats, cleats, uniforms, whatever to places like the Dominican Republic. FYI the Clemente family is 100% in support of Steve and RK.
This has been suggested before, and I'm open to the idea. Concerns that have come up include:

* How to regulate the listings so that some fulltime eBay sellers didn't use this as their constant marketplace, and

* Whether there would be some "bad" transactions where the goods were never delivered, or not "as described". eBay has the rating system, but our unpaid volunteer moderators (including me), don't have the time to handle those types of complaints.

Still, with the above concerns stated, I am open to considering such a forum if enough members think it's a good idea.

Great points Julie and those probably only graze the combined issues. IMHO, we let the ebayer's of the world run the retail and we remain the intellectual think-tank that sets standards for society to follow

On the softball website, there is a GTG (good to go) list posted for people who have had sucessful transactions, and some people have their own GTG list in their signature.

I wouldn't worry about ebayers selling stuff, the forum is not an auction, its a take it or leave it offer. The price that someone lists is the price they want for the item with shipping included. If someone doesn't like the price, they could always offer something lower....

I'm not a huge fan of the buying and selling - there are lots of good places to do this on the web - including ebay. Not sure that one more makes much sense.

If HSBBW were to go down this road, one computer board I participate in requires you to have 100 posts before you can list anything - and post padding is strictly frowned upon. Something similar might work here - especially if listings and comments on listing didn't count towards the 100.
td25 - I agree with 08Dad.

If Mn-Mom felt it would somehow help her to offset the large costs of running the site, then I would support it for that reason alone. Short of that, I think we do not need it. I don't think it is necessary to bump this thread anymore as I think you have had ample opportunity to make your point.
Julie, just some thoughts:

Perhaps a little casual legalese to frame such a venture could include "caveat emptor", basically because, as you've stated, there is no staff to monitor transactions and rate sellers and buyers. If people understand that concept up front, the HSBBW holds no more liability than a newspaper which runs classifieds.

Also, perhaps any SELLERS must have been registered with the HSBBW for a certain period (90 days??) before selling anything, and must be deemed general forum contributors. This could help people showing up here just to try and peddle stuff with no intention of ever actively contributing to the community.

The 'rules' can be totally set up by you and must be followed or 'no go'.
i wouldn't think it would take to much to do. but like anything it can be as involved as you make it.

but some good points brought up that i didn't think of.

i kind of like the idea, i think of it like the classified section. it doesn't need to be just equip.it could be books, dvd's etc. maybe just to pass them on.
