My son attends Elgin Community College (DII) and they seem to have built a pretty good baseball reputation over the past few years.
Another JUCO we visited and impressed us was Joliet Junior College (DIII). They also seem to do a good job of competing and moving their players along.
Parkland College (DII) in Champaign, IL has had vergy good success appearing in the NJCAA World Series over the past few years.
I have no first hand knowledge but have heard good things about the program at Illinois Valley Community College.
I'm sure stickwatcher will chime in on her favorites!
Triton College, Oakton , and I'll agree on IVCC (son's former hitting coach is an asst. there), but of course am partial to College of Lake County, Coach is a class act. Centerfielder son will be waiting to meet BigMW's son at our first conference game of the season.
Triton JC (River Grove, IL) is one of the best around. A lot of prospects come out of there..Kirby Pucket and Lance Johnson are the biggest names. Another is Tony Fiore, RHP for Houston Astros. Go to any Triton game and see a number of scouts.
Oakton CC (Des Plaines, IL) had a great year and is becoming a pretty good power house in the Chicago area.
Sorry BBWatcher...the Chicago area is loaded with baseball talent
Barton County CC in Great Bend Ks Allan County CC in Iola ks Redlands CC in Elreno OK a program on the rise Hutchinson CC in Hutchinson ks Garden city CC in Garden City ks
One of our midwest finest, Mr. Miles Kurgan of Leyden will attend San Jacinto J.C. in Houston TX. Roger Clemons and Andy Pettite went there and this school is a powerhouse annually.
Congrats to Miles. The fact that San Jacinto is PreSeason #2 this year and they signed a "northern" kid is a testament to how good the player is. I have not seen his name too many times on these boards, but someone found him. What a great opportunity.
Just curious, does anyone know if Miles Kurgan passed on his d1 offers to look at draft possibility or was this outstanding JC the "best fit" for him? Thanks
Miles and his family have a close relasionship at the JC. They have recruited Miles all of last year. When we played on Norwood together, his father knew he would be going there in Sept. Miles, is a qucility kid, quality parents. Id have him on my team anytime. Congrats to Miles
My son signed on to play for a JUCO downstate, Olney Central College about 25 minutes north of Kentucky border. You can sign a letter of intent to a Juco, ( only 1 ) a NAIA ( only 1 ) and a NCAA ( only 1 ), at the same time. you can work your options and always have something to fall back on. They begin play Feb 13th in Ga, then to Fla. Play baseball in Feb..how cool is that ?? ..
Northern Oklahoma College in Enid, Oklahoma.. is a DII power house in that region. A world series appearance 2 years ago. Last year they were ranked #3 in the country but were upset in tourney play. My son is in his first year there and he has very good things to say about the program, i.e., the coaches, the facilities, the schedule and the preparation.
I do believe very much that some JUCO programs are able to compete with some NCAA D1 programs. My son informed me that this past weekend, his team scrimaged a ranked DII school, and Northern beat them the first game, and but for one inning in the second game, played them even. Northern has one first year pitcher who was drafted last year out of HS and is being watched (Draft & Watch). And i am told that they have at least 4 pitchers who are touching 90mph. There are definitely very good ball players ar JUCO's, just look at the draft, many are taken from JUCOs at all levels. From my son's perspective it has been a great experience to date. Jim in VT
I've heard and/or read good things about other downstate JUCO's, namely, Wabash Valley CC and John A. Logan. What's your (or anyone else's) opinion.....
We visited Wabash Valley, my son didnt like the coach. He has a nice program yes, but, we felt uncomfortable. Logan is on one of then top Juco's in the state. well run, and always competative. Some pretty good baseball down there. If you need to talk more about Juco's down there, we can talk in private.
Yes it was a major transition between VT and Ok. However, there are not as many differences as one might think. It is rural in VT, like in OK. And the setting is small town in both areas, with Vt being smaller than where he is now. So that adjustment has not been difficult. In fact there is more to do in Enid, than in our general area. The lay of the land is certainly different. As is the weather. We have at least 2 feet of snow on the ground now, and NOC will be playing their first game on Sunday. The major transition was leaving his friends. Interesting though when he came home for Xmas break, I think that he realized that he had more friends now in OK. So all in all he has transitioned very well. So he loves everything about where he is and he has adjusted very well. He is very happy about his decision and is doing extremely good in school. AS for the baseball program, it is everything that he hoped it would be. The coaching staff is great, his team mates are great, the facilities are excellent. And they are a top notch team. I do not think he would trade his situation at this stage. Dan had been to Ok a few times for showcases, for he always wished to play ball in that part of the country. He was recommended to the coaching staff at NOC by the former OSU coach who saw him and advised him to think about a year or two at a JUCO, to gain baseball maturity and experience. The rest is, as they say, history. Oh and his dress now at times is definitely western. Anyway thanks for asking. Keep in touch.
