Happy 4th.

See this all the time, MIF mishandles throwdown. Yet error is given to catcher.

Unless throw sails into CF. don't understand this. maybe greater minds can explain

I sure can’t speak for all SKs, but I will toss out a few ideas. 1st of all, if a throw touches the ground and isn’t caught, the error has to be charged to the thrower, catcher or any other fielder.

Here’s the OBR rule for throws attempting to put out a runner trying to steal.

10.07 STOLEN BASES AND CAUGHT STEALING

(b) When a runner is attempting to steal, and the catcher, after receiving the pitch, makes a wild throw trying to prevent the stolen base, the official scorer shall credit the runner with a stolen base. The official scorer shall not charge an error unless the wild throw permits the stealing runner to advance one or more extra bases, or permits another runner to advance, in which case the official scorer shall credit the runner with the stolen base and charge one error to the catcher.

Unless the runner would have clearly been out had the ball been caught, held onto, and the tag had been properly applied by the receiving player, there just aren’t a lot of errors charged on plays attempting to put out a runner, stealing or not.

I can’t remember more than a couple times over the years I’ve scored an error on something like that, and they were when a runner had somehow stumbled and was more than 10’ from the bag and the ball was there but the player receiving the throw just didn’t catch it.
