Does anyone know what colleges consider a respectable speed to go from home to first ect. I have heard from other parents less than 6.9 seconds. Any input on bass rinning times would be appreciated
I am assuming the 6.9 time you were quoted was a 60 yd dash time. Home to first times should be in the low 4 sec. range. But there are a number of variables. First and foremost, is the hitter RH or LH? Obviously a short distance for a LH hitter to run, so all things equal this time should be faster. Just as important, what position does your play? speed is huge for outfielders and MIFs. Not so important for Corner IFs and catchers. And a non-existent issue for pitchers.
First I must apoligize for my spelling of speed! My son is right handed and play SS and pitches, for tryouts he 40 yard time was 4.5 seconds. Was not tested from home to 1st as tryouts were indoors. He is the backup center fielder but has only played that position once this year.
IF his primary position is SS and he runs a 4.5 40, he can FLY! As such, he should be able to run well under a 6.9 60. Bottom line, if the 4.5 is accurate, speed should not be an issue for him at ANY position.
Good luck to your son! I am originally from Chicago, always like to hear about HS players from that area.
