Great article and great website all the way around! Very good information and fun articles.

I think some of the parents on here whose son's have just entered the realm of Minor league ball could probably use more hindsight on the rigors of everyday life during this time. From a player perspective as well as a parents perspective.

Just a suggestion!

Bristol! Same league as yours! And similar living conditions! They told the players to move out of the hotel yesterday and find a place to live, lol! Fortunately for our guy he had befriended a player with a car and they spent the day looking, and finally finding a place to rent. After a trip to the furniture store they rented some beds and a couch.

They pulled it together!

Not sure how the folks without transportation managed...

Oh yes, three days in the hotel and go find a place to live. Eek I am surprised though, many teams help their first season players to adjust.

Good luck!
FF,

I was looking at Eric's team roster and noticed a name that I haven't seen in a while. He is a Pitcher.

Mitch Mustain.

Ex Arkansas Razorback QB and Ex USC Trojan QB.

Looks like since football didn't work out for the talented football that his golden arm is gonna try and make him a living on the diamond!

Mustain signs with White Sox

Our son stays at the hotel the entire summer, but he is in rookie ball so maybe they help them more.Didnt play first two games, contract glich, was scheduled to be in the lineup today but thunder and rain so a DH tomorrow.

His roomate is HS kid, drafted in 6th round. There are like 12 senior signs and then mostly dominicans.

For our son he is just so happy to have been given an opportunity that he is liking everything so far....

His location is pretty nice as there is a full service walmart(groceries),and tons of good places to eat within walking distance.

He says he likes the balls they use,as they have less seam I guess than college, and he said he is getting much more backspin which makes ball carrySmile

He called his dad for fathers day and gave us all the scoop. He is very impressed with Nationals organizationa and says they have treated him very well.

He is happy... I am sure there are tough days to come, but he is living in the moment.
First, congratulations to all being drafted/signed this year!

Son decided last year that he would take a note from some of his teammates and he and a couple others bought a crock pot and cooler for away trips. They would either pack their food in the cooler or buy it on the road (they usually stay in the same hotels on away trips so they know if there is a grocery store close by). They ate lots of chicken/rice, hot beef and pork roasts instead of fast food, not to mention saved most of their meal money.

I have to say he has been very pleased with the Rockies organization. He is in short season A and lives with a host family which is really a benefit/comfort in so many ways.

On a side note, he did learn about the currency exchange rate last year in Canada.....he will not make that mistake this year!

Good luck in every way to the players and their families this season!!!!!!
Love the article Meachrm, really made me laugh! This is our son's first full season, and from the stories we have heard so far, your article pretty much sums it up Smile!! He too has become an avid reader. We got him a "Kindle" for Christmas, which apparently was the perfect gift! He said he's read a ton of books, can download games, and a movie or two at a time to watch on the road....he also found a "Crockpot Cookbook" to help him figure out his new Crockpot!
Fan...Yes, the books for the Kindle are downloaded from "Amazon". I believe if you purchase the Nook, the books are downloaded from "Barnes and Noble". If you have a library card you can also download books for free from your local library! It was a great purchase!!

Dad04...yes, our son sleeps on an air matress and relaxes in the $15 recliner he purchased at the local thrift shop!! Big Grin

My son's good friend has been in two organizations in five seasons, so far...on his 10th team now. He downloads stuff from Craiglist at the beginning of the year and uploads at the end of the season, or at the next transaction, whichever comes first.
Our son in several years away (as a HS freshman) but I'll tuck this list away, it's great! Im surprised by the living arrangements though. We have a minor league team about 25 minutes from us (we live outside town) and offered to host a player this year. They assigned us one, he arrived on a Saturday and on Sunday told us it was too far to drive & he was moving in with 3 other guys. I can totally understand how he would prefer peers to an unknown family and I know closer is better, but I certainly hope he at least has a bed!
