2014 is going to miss his high school season due to an injury.  He has been getting interest from several D-2 schools and just recently from 3 D-1 schools.

How will missing the 11th grade school season change his being recruited?  What does he need to do to be sure he doesn't get left out?  He will be ready for the summer showcase tournament season but will that be enough?

Thanks for any advice.

1st of all don't regret taking the time during the HS season.  Bottom line, it shouldn't hurt his recruiting.  I'm not sure what's going on, but it is a good thing you are taking care of it now.  A kid on my son's HS team had a shoulder issue all throughout his junior year.  He put off having anything done to it until the season was over and I think it really hurt him.  Because he waited, he missed all summer and fall and was just getting back senior season.  Because he didn't play summer or fall, he had very limited options and is now not playing in college.  He should have taken care of his arm right at the beginning of his junior year and been ready for fall ball, camps and showcases to have a shot.

I think you are doing the right thing and you should be fine, especially if he'll be ready by summer.  That is when the big action takes place anyway.

My son also missed most of his Jr. HS season on the mound.  Fortunately he had been seen the summer before in PG events so he he was already on the radar.  Hopefully your son will be able to play this summer, if so then get him to some good "exposure" events and if he does well he should be alright.

The mental side of missing the season is the toughest on the player (and parent), just know it's not the end of the world.  Good luck.

Jerseydad,

I've often felt like telling young talented players and their parents  it's important to get identified early.  Others keep saying the junior year or after is best.  There are several important and beneficial reasons to get on the "radar" early, but no one ever thinks about injury.  I could name over a hundred very talented players (even first round picks) that lost all or parts of their junior and/or senior year, but things still turned out very well because they had already been recognized. In fact, there are a few out there right now!

Do not panic.  Same situation in our family.  He came back stronger than ever and went on a terror and now at a D1 and very happy.  If he can play this summer great, but if not get his rehab in.  Stay focused.  The good thing is many coaches recruit late.  Sounds like he already has interest, so keep those coaching staffs updated on his progress.  This is very importatant - Good Luck!

My son missed his sophmore season with an injury and couldn't make the varsity line up his junior year.  Things took off the summer and fall before the senior season and he's found home in D1 ball.

Granted, the earlier you can show you belong at the schools you want to go to, the better opportunities you'll have.  What you don't want to do now is spoil the remaining chances you have by rushing back from an injury.  There are opportunities over the summer and fall.
