Any thoughts on the rosters?

As a matter of fact....

The All Stars should be voted on by current players, current coaches, members of the Hall of Fame, and mayber throw in former players who have been retired fewer than 10 years. Replace all the big market popularity contests by voters who know what it takes to play at that high of a level and you've got a group of players more representative of the true elite of the game.

MLB naturally has to be concerned about generating as much fan interest as possible, I just don't think changing who casts votes would have one bit of impact on fan support.

Actually, the All Stars game determining home field advantage for the WS has left me less interested in the game than when it was an exhibition, primarily because of the selection process.

Fans tend to vote for their home team players and recognizable names that may be past their prime or hobbled with injuries. For an exhibition game, those choices are fun and fine, but not for one that 'counts'. Don't care much for the 'every team must be represented' aspect either; some teams (alas) just don't have a guy good enough to be called an All Star.

Nobody who knows the game is suggesting that the best MLB players of 2006 will be competing against each other. Nobody expects highly-paid players to go flat out and risk injury for this game either. To base home field advantage on this rather than record (or even alternating years) is just a bad idea.

I was, for example, relieved to see that Pujols won't be in the hr derby ---- particularly after Edmonds' derby injury a couple of years ago.
I think Liriano should be on the team along with Crawford. I would consider Liriano, an up and coming star, in the top two for AL Cy Young at the break. Crawford, is hitting over .300 and his speed is just rediculous. He stole all over the Red Sox this past series, pretty much at will. Schilling also had a shot to make it. He was questionable, but could have been put on it. Lowell to me should also be a candidate. I don't think he deserves to be on it, but I think his name should be mentioned. He's hitting over .300 with nearly 30 doubles and is the best defensive 3rd basemen in the game. Alex Gonzales is hitting .270 and playing rediculous defense, just like Omar Vizquel did when he made the team when he was with the Indians. I'm not saying these Red Sox players because I'm a Sox fan, but to point out that there are probably several players from each good team that deserve mention.
