Here is "par" so far in the major leagues...
PITCHING
ERA 4.36
Hits per inning 1.107
Walks per inning .37
Ks per inning .728
% Quality Starts 49.4%
% of all runs scored that are unearned 7.55%
HITTING
Batting average .264
On base .332
Slugging .415
OPS .747
ABs per homerun 34.95
% of hits that are extra-base hits 33.4%
Correlation coefficient for...
Batting average 76.1%
On-base 79.7%
Slugging 87.8%
On-base + slugging (OPS) 92.0%
The numbers above are par for major league players. Many are surprised by the % of extra-base hits to total hits. The above correlation coefficients say that OPS explains runs scored with a 92% correlation, batting average explains runs scored with a 76.1% correlation.
Bottom-line, the next level is looking for OPS (not On-base). They are looking for pitching that does well in OPS against.
