Robert,

I think you got Keller Dad (Ken referenced above) and Ken Guthrie mixed up.

Too slow OP, Ken has deleted his previous posts.

Come on! This was a topic that caught my eye. I was interested in this event and thought perhaps some of you might shed some light on the subject,i.e. Who this tryout was for? Why allowing such an early age? Is participating in this a valuable experience that might help later on? Or is it a waste of time and some gimic? Instead, out of 11 Posts there is ONLY the orginal that has anything to do with the subject. The rest is a bunch of guys Chatty Kathying around on the internet. Come On! Get back on TRACK here.
PBB - it is no gimmick. Tryout is conducted by the MLB Scouting Bureau. Players go through a pro-style workout in the morning and then two dozen or so are selected to stay for the afternoon and play in a scrimmage game. Scouting information derived from this is fed into the Scouting Bureau database on player prospects. Age cutoff begins at 16 so player profiles can be developed over several years for those that are followed. You will see a WIDE range of talent at this open tryout. Hence, the midday "cut". Worth going to if your son has aspirations of being drafted.
For what it's worth, my son attended this event when he was playing his 16u summer for Coach Sharp. It was a cattle call, probably over 200 people - "players" of all manner of "talent" from guys in jeans to minor league free agents. Everyone got 5 swings of soft toss to determine if they could hit or not. After that they chose two teams worth of players and a bunch of pitchers and catchers to play a game in the afternoon. It was a long day, but it was a good experience for my son.
PBB Son attended the MLB's Scouting Bureau Open Tryout Monday June 9th at Eastfield College. He made the final cut of players and was asked to stay and attend a Team type work out and Situational Game that followed. Unfortunately the Game was rained out just prior to PBB Son coming to bat but it was a big day for him. There were over 250+ players in attendance that ranged from High School Juniors to College Players from all over and a bunch of others(ex minor league players, ex college, walk ons etc)

Out of the 250+ Players the MLSB asked back only 3 each First, Second and Third Basemen, 4 each Shortstops, 6 Catchers, 7 Outfielders and I don't know how many pitchers,...maybe 10+?? Anyways it was a pretty awesome day. It started at 9am and got rained out around 5pm. Not sure what will come of it other than he got noticed today by the MLB and his name went into their data base as a prospect.

Thanks to all of you that contributed to this thread, your information and comments really helped.

I wasn't sure. When I got back from a much needed Gatorade Run the Outfielders and Pitchers where all in the third base dugout and all I could see were their legs. Then it started raining. I think the first pitcher had just finished his warm-up pitches and the first batter was coming to the plate when the bottom fell out.
