I look at this as little more than hush money by the NCAA. Wow, they could increase scholarsips by up to $2K in the top tier D1 schools while they make Billions with a B. This a joke, right? What about the decline in undergraduate education quality that has been going on for 20-30 years because of the NCAA, ESPN, College Presidents, and big time college athletics? How are these slight changes going to help these athletes succeed in the classroom? It is ridiculous to think the NCAA is doing anything but to serve the NCAA.
But for our lowly (in terms of scholarship dollars anyway!) sport of baseball, it might put a few more dollars into a scholly offer if the 25% or 50% or whatever offer is based on total COA. (adding in books and travel, etc).
Also, as I understand it, the COA can vary for different students, based on estimated travel expenses. A Boston kid going to Cali will have a higher COA than someone who lives down the street. Maybe this change could help sweeten the pot a little bit for recruits who live in distant states?
Check out this devastating article from the October issue of The Atlantic magazine about college sports and, in particular, the NCAA. It is guaranteed to make your blood boil.
It's mostly about football but there's some discussion of baseball.
I do agree with you guys, but as we just shipped out younger son off to school out of state...and having worked on booking him back home for Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc...
Well...I'm just happy to have whatever small additional help may come from this.
As an aside...I always thought it really unfair to recruit a kid out of inner-city NY or Chicago to FL or CA and not be able to help him with the airfare. If is only solves that problem...then its an improvement.
Seems to me that this is more geared to keep football players from not selling their rings or accepting gifts more than thinking it will help the average joe athlete on a partial scholarship.
