Just got new job in North Dallas. Moving from Virginia Beach area and have two boys that play ball and am looking for imput on if I should transfer them or leave them where they are. Oldest is a 2012 and the other is 2014. The 2012 is thought to be a mid major D1 prospect and the younger may end up with issues being on the smallish side as far as size goes.

What are the best schools in that area for acedemics and which of those have the best coaches? Not looking to get folks picking at each other just some honest information for a very important decision.

Thank you for your help.

Wow, that's a loaded question!
I will say that you do NOT want your kids in Dallas Independent School District (DISD).
Depending on your housing, Lake Highlands is in Richardson ISD. Plano ISD is splits 9th & 10 grades a "high School", then 11th & 12th at the Senior Highs. Very crowded, but high academics.
If I had it to do over again, I'd have bought in Southlake, Carrol ISD..very consistent with high academics for the last 15-20 years! And property values have been less volatile. Frisco, The Colony, McKinney & Allen (far North suburbs) are all strong 5A programs (student body over 2100).
Check UIL for classifications, Athletic & Academic "governess"...
Suburbs above are middle to upper middle class. The economy has brought housing prices down some 6% to 20%, & there is a surplus in many of these neighborhoods.

We've got some very competitive summer select teams/ organizations, that consistenly play on a National level. Lots of great baseball in the Metroplex. Lots of great mid-D-1, too.
Congrats on the relocation!
Oops!...no slight meant for not adding Coppell. It is a very goodschool district, on northern end of DFW airport. Grapevine is also good.

RE: Coaches, most are primarily football, too. I think Coppell is baseball only & a couple of the Plano schools, as I recall. Univ. Park is baseball only. (above)
Have to agree on the privates listed, with Jesuit being the highest in both academics & baseball. And, the neighborhood around Jesuit is excellent, for Dallas. (South of LBJ (I-635 Loop) & Dallas North Tollway, south to Forest Ln, west to Midway, or East to Preston Rd, is a beautiful neighborhood! Homes are 40-50 yrs. old, sprawling on large 1/3-1/2 ac.+, treed lots. Estate area, but worth it!! Very convenient to the Galleria, & major highways.

Great academics. Great history (Chris Young and Clayton Kershaw current MLB alumni, Matt Stafford, current NFL, lots of college players). Good facilities. Outstanding coaching staff.

Heck, its the first day of school and EVERYTHING looks good.

I agree, it is a great option (both academically and athletically)
if your check book can afford the housing prices. Smile

In keeping with luv baseball request:

I offered a few suggestions.

If you have something to contribute to their topic, I'm sure luv baseball will appreciate it.

Check out Prosper or Argyle. Prosper is shaping up to be the next Southlake (this coming from someone who was born and raised in Southlake when it was under 2,000 people). Facilities are better than anywhere in the metroplex, great coach in Carpenter who knows how to run a program, definitely an up and comer. Argyle is certainly behind Prosper, but if you like having some space where you're close to the action, this is a good place as well. Great schools where graduating classes aren't ridiculously large.

Just "staying on topic" Big Grin
School districts in the northern suburbs generally have outperformed the urban district, neighborhood crime & campus crime has proven to be less. There may be occassional exceptions. Property values & community amenities are nicer in the 'burbs mentioned.

5. McKinney, TX WINNER
Top 100 rank: 5
Population: 125,000
Unemployment: 7.8%
Compare McKinney to Top 10 Best Places

Lots of towns near Dallas have low crime, affordable homes, and good jobs; McKinney is no exception. What makes it stand out is its gem of a downtown. Lovingly restored 19th-century buildings house restaurants, boutiques, and galleries; the 1875 courthouse contains a new performing-arts center.
McKinney's employment opportunities are robust, sparing many residents a rush-hour drive of up to an hour to Dallas. Defense contractor Raytheon has a 3,700-person division here, and a mix of businesses in financial services, medical technology, and eco-friendly manufacturing are moving in.

Though McKinney has grown like mad over the past decade, you'd never suspect it when driving through its tree-filled communities surrounded by ponds, parks, and hiking trails. --Vanessa Richardson
I would put some emphasis on where you will work and if you travel much. You will be able to find good schools with good programs all around the metroplex. If you are on the east side then Heath, Rowlett and Rockwall are good. In you are North you have Frisco, Allen and McKinney.

If you are in the central metroplex then Coppell, Colleyville, Flower Mound and Southlake are good choices. These also are closer to the airport in case your job has you travel very much. Very convenient to fly in and still make little Johnny's game.

If you are in Dallas then Highland Park is good and Jesuit Prep is a very good private school on the north side.

Out west is Keller and some others.

All the schools mentioned are quality schools and have some very good baseball programs.

I just found it interesting that with all the positive information you had to offer you chose to open with a negative toward 160,000 students and 19,000 adults trying to help those students. I currently have 3 kids in a DISD high school (a 4th will start in 2 years). I was just wondering if you were speaking from experience or not.

Now, Tx-Husker, do you know where they put my body?

I thought my kids were the only ones who knew everything but now I can add baseballmom to the list.

Faith Christian School in Grapevine. Baseball program is good, play good competition, but it is about way more than baseball. Acedemics are top notch, located central to metroplex. Can live in Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville, Coppell, Flower Mound or anywhere around and it is easily accessable. Check it out at grapevinefaith.com.

Faith Christian mentioned before TCA, Liberty, Prestonwood, St. Marks, Parish Episcopal, etc?
One would think you'd seriously consider Flower Mound as a possible destination:

1) FMHS, academically rated as the largest 5A program in Texas to receive the "Exemplary" status (the highest rating available)
2) Athletically, the baseball program at FMHS has been to the playoff's 10 straight years and reached the State Championship two different times.
3) Close to the airport for those needing to travel
4) Rated 6th Best Place to Live in the Nation by Forbes Magazine - 2009
5) Ranked 5th in the "Best Places to Raise Your Family" by Frommer's - 2006
6) BusinessWeek.com liste FM as one of the Top 25 Best Affordable Suburbs and number one for the Dallas area - 2006

Great access to Dallas, Ft Worth and all the suburbs in between. Take a look at www.flower-mound.com

I heard they've got their own Olive Garden now, too.

Longs,

May be true but since the topic was a baseball player, who cares about any other sport! Besides, Marcus baseball has never been to the State Tourney and only made the playoffs 4 times in the last 10 years. FMHS has been 10 straight years! WE ARE FLOWER MOUND!

Either way, what a great place to raise a family.

Unfortunately for Marcus baseball, the AD/Football Coach chased off the baseball coach who took them to the playoffs 2 of the last 4 times. It was the only two playoff years in their history that they went deeper in the playoffs than FMHS.

While everyone here is welcoming you to the area and trying to convince you that their town is a great option, with wonderful opportunities, I'll be the minority here.

I just want to say, stay outta McKinney. I don't want you here.

Traffic is getting bad enough. Stay out of Allen too because I don't want you to get in my way while I'm trying to get to work.

(unless you're willing to car pool and can be available as my designated driver, then I will welcome you too)
