On our team they bring the talented kids up and they play wherever they
( whichever position ) they are needed at. Not saying this is the right answer,..just the way things have been done in our neck of the woods.
Makes for a whole lot of movin' around, even during the season.
Perhaps it depends on the coach and his particular philosophy.
Probably lots of other approaches out there.

Sorry,...not sure that was really any help. Confused

It doesn't appear to be that way at my sons school. he just got passed over after the coaches told him he would be the number 1 topic of discussion. He was moved up for one game, pitched 3 shutout innings, went 3 for 3. He is a lefty so limited as to positions.
The other problem is he hasn't pitched since, about a week. They sat him after that game too. He went to the coach today and asked if could throw a bullpen and was told no. Nobody has thrown since SAT.

Based on team need. I have had kids move up to play 2B, for example, because we simply needed someone to play the position and they were ready to handle it. Good coaches don't bring a guy up just because he has tools - playing time is much more valuable than sitting and watching. However, injuries and other circumstances can force a coaches' hand at times. Bottom line: most players come up to varsity when they can help the team win, NOT just because they have talent.
This is an interesting question even for us as a "select" travel team---I say "select" because we do not have tryouts--we "select" and invite the players we want

We always get asked "why wasn't my son invited?' and it really has nothing to do with talent-- as a team we want certain type players-- kids who have footspeed, play defense and can hit for average--if we get power that is a bonus---but we build our team around defense and pitching and solid fundamentals

We also dont carry a load of position players--we are most times pitcher heavy because of the compressed schedule we play--we need a load of arms

Parents should not feel that there son was passed over-- he might not fit the team needs at that particular season and it is as simple as that--- just because your son isnt selected doen't mean he cannot play the game
