On Thursday, the Giants must make a decision on whether to exercise a $10,500,000 option for Edgar Renteria or buyout the option for $500,000.
There is little doubt that this will be a business decision. One has to think, though, there will be emotions, considerable emotion.
It may well be that Edgar will choose to retire and this won't be too difficult or "painful" for either side.
No matter what happens tomorrow, nothing will ever change that swing in the 7th on Monday.
Still, for me at least, tomorrow does seem too soon for $$$$ to be the "voice" that says Edgar is no longer a Giant.

I think the Giants might buy out Renteria but then immediately seek to negotiate with him. They might well want him, but he's not going to command $10+ million any more.

As for him and Uribe, they did great this post season. But between them and Sandoval, the Giants must have the fattest infield in MLB. Sandoval went from being a top hitter in 2009 to being a bench player most recently. Renteria was, in turn, lucky to get onto the field in time for his heroics. All three of them could stand to hire personal trainers in the off season and stay off the banquet circuit. Careers end sooner rather than later when guys don't put in the work to stay in top form.

Otherwise, maybe what the Giants ought to do is go get Prince Fielder in the offseason and do a product tie-in with McDonald's or something.

Renteria as a Met? Please No!! Now - lets be real, he was hurt a lot this year and had about 3 home runs! We already have plenty of those types on the roster.
Edgar Renteria is at the end, or nearly so, of a long and wonderful career. Even though he was outstanding in this World Series, he was not much of a player for most of the regular season. His bat isn't what it used to be, and neither is his body. He's a wonderful player who has had a better MLB career than probably 90% of the guys who've ever played in The Show, but I think it'd be great if he chose to ride off into the sunset now, as he couldn't go out any more on top than he is at this point. I always thought that was a neat thing about Jerome Bettis when he did that after winning a Super Bowl, and not many players get that opportunity. Renteria has that chance, and I hope he takes advantage of it. Can he still play, sure he can. Should he continue trying? Not so sure about that one.

I agree with 06catcherdad exactly. In the hard cruel world of professional sports, don't be fooled by one hot week or two. Edgar is no longer a starting shortstop. I dare say if he was out there the whole season, the Giants might not have gotten to the playoffs. What he is, is a veteran presence who is capable of doing great in short bursts or in money situations. Don't be fooled into thinking he could do much of anything for a club like the Mets.
There's something we all love about seeing a fine professional go out on top.

But even if he signs somewhere for "only" something like $2 million, how many of us would pass that up?

How many guys from the Carribbean would pass that up? You can feed a lot of extended family members on that kind of money.

Renteria is probably a baseball lifer. The kind of guy who ends up coaching in some capacity when his playing days end. So I would expect him to play as long as possible. Playing pays better than coaching, unless you're Joe Torre or something.
